Marine 0 Lynn 1

THE Linnets progressed to the next stage by the slenderest if margins and picked up a welcome payday of £2,300 in the process.
Midfielder Carl Palmer’s strike 14 minutes into the second half separated the two sides as Lynn avenged a 2-1 defeat in the same competition some 25 years ago. Linnets boss Carl Heggs was forced into changes with Joe Magunda serving a one game suspension for picking up five bookings, while Leicester loanee Lathanie Rowe-Turner was ruled out of the tie after Foxes officials failed to obtain FA clearance for the player.
The Linnets made life extremely difficult for Marine in a disappointing game.
Both defences being well on top and neither goalkeeper had many real saves to make until Marine poured forward in search of an equaliser in the last five minutes.
Lynn’s best chance of the first half came when Ben Muirhead’s effort was blocked by Shaun Callacher, whose initial error had set up the winger.
The hosts came more into the game as the half wore on with Alan Burton firing over from 25 yards out, while Linnets goalkeeper Danny Gay smothered the shot of home striker Liam Rushton.

Lynn’s crucial winner arrived in the 59th minute when Gay’s kick was collected by Owen Story and played to Palmer, whose angled shot left Tim Dittmer with little chance between the posts. Marine had two half-chances before Lynn missed two golden opportunities to extend their advantage.
Firstly, Kwesi Appiah firing over the top when well placed after good work from Story before Anthony Robinson produced a weak finish, which Dittmer smothered comfortably, after finding himself clean through on goal.
The last five minutes saw Marine embark on a cavalry charge to try to salvage a replay, Rushton turning neatly in the area but shooting over before Peter Cumiskey forced the first real save of the day from Gay, bustling in to the area before firing in a powerful effort which the Linnets keeper parried with his legs. Callacher almost came to he rescue for the Mariners with a long-range drive which Gay clawed out from under he bar and Lynn held on to book their place in the next stage with a gritty display.
