Beckenham Town 1 King's Lynn Town 2
The Linnets had to come from behind this afternoon in order to beat their hosts and advance to the next round of the
Vase and book a trip to last season's FA Vase quarter finalists Norton & Stockton Ancients in a fortnight's time. A game
of two halves was played on a pitch of two halves, with the half of the pitch nearest the Beckenham clubhouse being sodden, a fact that led to Beckenham taking the lead. Indeed upon arrival at Eden Park Avenue, the talk was that any rain this morning would have seen yet another postponement of this tie.
White returned to the Lynn midfield having recovered from a bout of flu, meaning that Doherty dropped to the bench. This was the only change from the starting line-up that comprehensively beat Raunds last weekend. Bacon was unavailable due to the failure of his obtaining international clearance when this tie was originally due to be played. This meant that Moreira had a place in the first team squad for the first time this season.
Beckenham began the game on the front foot and Street had to be alert to clear from Conteh as the the home forward threatened.
On 6 minutes Bexfield hit a 30 yard effort a couple of yards wide after a J. Thurlbourne free kick was cleared. Harris volleyed over a couple of minutes later as Lynn continued to pile on the pressure.
However the Becks forward line of Conteh, G. Gorman and Paul were always a threat and were causing problems for the Lynn defence, as they struggled with the pitch conditions.
Beckenham fashioned a chance on 12 minutes but Conteh could only shoot straight at Street from 18 yards.
Two minutes later the home team deservedly went in front. Street scuffed a clearance as he slipped, McKone picked up the loose ball and went round McNeil and the keeper, before squaring to allow Conteh a simple tap in from a couple of yards.
On 16 minutes Watson picked up a yellow card when he pulled back Conteh on the half way line as the striker attempted to break.
The referee evened up the card count on 18 minutes when Lawson was booked for fouling J. Thurlbourne.
At this point the play was being continually broken up as both sides were giving the ball away all too easily. L. Thurlbourne was working tirelessly in midfield although White, normally the engine putting in the mileage, seemed strangely off key. Defty was being well marshalled by in all honesty, an excellent Becks defence. It seemed that Lynn would have to work hard to get back into the game.
On 20 minutes Defty glanced a header wide and soon after Blue saved well as Hill diverted a J. Thurlbourne corner goalwards.
Defty lifted a pass over the home defence and Spriggs ran on, cut back inside and curled a left footed effort just wide on 23 minutes.
Alsop blocked superbly soon after as Curran shot powerfully goalwards before Conteh shot wide.
Just past the half hour Harris was denied when he hit a shot first time after a Defty flick on, but Blue got down to smother his shot.
G. Gorman fired just over as again Beckenham took advantage of a static Lynn defence.
Farley had to clear off the line as Harris got on the end of a J. Thurlbourne cross.
Lynn's frustration was apparent as they battled to get back into the game.
Becks almost doubled their lead 5 minutes before half time when McNamara hit a free kick from 30 yards, but Street flung himself to his right and turned the ball behind for a corner.
Curran picked up a booking when he scythed down Watson from behind.
In first half injury time G. Gorman went down clutching his face after an off the ball incident involving McNeil. The referee consulted his assistant and cautioned the big defender.
The half fizzled out and the teams left the field with the home side holding a well earned lead.
Half time: Beckenham 1-0 King's Lynn
Total playing time: 47:52
The second half began with Lynn making a change in defence, with Buhlemann replacing McNeil.
Lynn started the second half with intent, Spriggs shooting wide on two occasions as the away side looked to get back on terms.
On 52 minutes Lynn were awarded a penalty when Harris was brought down by Lawson as he looked to turn the defender. However Defty fired the spot kick well over and yet another chance for an equaliser had gone.
Beckenham began to play deeper as they looked to preserve their lead and on the odd occasion they managed to get into the Lynn half, the away defence, seemingly strengthened with Buhlemann's introduction, coped well with any threat.
On the hour Defty headed straight into Blue's arms and a couple of minutes later Lynn made another change, Doherty replacing White.
L.Thurlbourne soon broke from midfield, played in J. Thurlbourne who shot early from 20 yards and saw his effort drift harmlessly wide.
D. Gorman shot over after a by now rare Becks attack. It only seemed a matter of time before Lynn got an equaliser at this stage. They were winning the midfield skirmishes and defending well.
To the relief of the travelling fans that equaliser arrived on 78 minutes. Spriggs got free down the right and crossed, Blue fumbled and the ball broke to a lurking Doherty, who gleefully shot low into the left corner of the net from 10 yards.
Beckenham strengthend their defence when Holder replaced McNamara on 81 minutes, as the home side looked to hold onto the draw and earn a replay.
But it wasn't to be as Lynn went in front on 84 minutes. A corner was played in and there was Defty to stoop and head past Blue from 8 yards.
Moreira entered the fray, replacing Harris on 88 minutes.
There was time before the final whistle for an almighty scramble in the Lynn penalty area. Conteh wriggled free but his shot was blocked, as was Paul's follow up. The ball broke to McKone 20 yards out, but he could only fire just over and the away fans breathed a sigh of relief..
L. Thurlbourne had a shot deflected wide and Defty headed just over as Lynn finished the game well on top and looking good value for the win.
