Julian Joachim is to train with Boston Town with a view to joining the Poachers.
The former Premier League star is said to be "very keen" on returning to Tattershall Road, where he started his career as a raw teenager.
Joint manager Ian Dunn said: "We need to discuss terms with him but we're hopeful he will agree to sign.
"He still has a lot to offer and we will really benefit from his quality.
"This is a statement of intent on our behalf that we mean business this season."
Joachim, now 37, has agreed to come to pre-season training, which starts tomorrow (June 26).
After making a big impression as a youngster for the Poachers' youth team, he went on to play for a string of big clubs including Leicester City, Aston Villa, Coventry City and Leeds United.
Joachim played alongside Nicky Butt, Sol Campbell, Robbie Fowler, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes for the England side that won the European Under 18 Championships in 1993 and also won nine England Under 21 caps.
