Intimidation
« on: May 27, 2012, 07:07:08 PM »
As I have mentioned before it is many years since I watched the Linnets at the Walks so I am wondering if they still come out onto the field to a signature tune. In the old days it used to be a stirring march called "Blazeaway". I know I was still young and impressionable in those far off days just after the war but the sight of my heroes trotting out onto the pitch to the deafening sound of that gorgeous march made me swell with pride and I am sure it put the wind up the opposition who wandered out dispiritedly.
If they've dropped it please can someone suggest they re-institute it.
The intimidatory effect of that smart disciplined entrance on the opposition, and the officials, is worth maybe five goals a season.
Have a listen and imagine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GQHt2CdyeM&feature=related

to the thro's of Aint it a pitty she's only one titty to feed the baby on !

On a serious note I remember playing senior amateur football in the fifties and changing in the dressing room under the stand listening to marching music before the game I always found it quite stirring. The standard of play was really high due to the wage cap for pro's and the fact as an amateur you were paid. One of the clubs I played with paid me 1/6 expenses for two buses return which I signed for and I then went into the bar and received an envelope with £3.50 in it which was not bad in the fifties in London.Happy day's!

I just knew someone would know those words. But you have to admit it gets the blood pounding.

If they played Blazeaway I would think I was at a Circus listening to that.

Sweet had a decent
Number one hit.  It contained the line "we just haven't got a clue what to do"

Learn something new everyday, I never knew what the name of the tune was but remember Mick Wright leading out the Linnets to it many times :-)

Rosey, I think you are getting your Sweets mixed up. That Line came from Ballroom Blitz, not Block Buster.

This about suitable lyrics is all very well but it kind of misses the main point of my original post. I am sure all the suggestions have much to recommend them but you can't say they are very intimidatory. The opposition might think to themselves " Wow these guys must be very cool" but they probably won't think "Goodness me I do hope nobody notices me trembling".
First impressions are so important. The first sight the opposition get of the Linnets should induce an immediate sense of inferiority. Now there are those who think a group hug builds team spirit and demonstrates togetherness. Equally there are those who like to begin  a match with a demonstration of open mouth tongue waggling and staring out the opposition. I am not a fan of either. We are British after all. What could be better than a line of men smartly trotting out to a marching tune?

I'm almost ashamed to say I remember that too! I never knew the name either, but I think I've heard it recently at the Banger Racing!
