Tony, I cannot agree with that.  A Player can develop at any level. If the natural ability is there it will come out. With decent coaching. Setch is a good enough judge of a player to know if he can step up.  I can only assume he doesnt feel there is anyone with the talent to force their way into the first squad ( Please note the word squad).  Going back over the years, how old was Mark Howard when he made his Lynn first team debut ?  As they say, if you are good enough you are old enough.

On the other hand, take one example...  For me Fryatt is probably not close to being a first teamer at step 4, so what would be best for him - a year 'developing' in the reserves where he (and Setch) would learn very little about his ability to cope at a higher level or a year at a Ridgeons club where he would start and be tested every week?

I accept that the current crop are developing as a squad, but when we are talking about finding future first teamers it has to be at an appropriate level and that would be my main concern for the reserves this season.  Looking back at the old club, a few got the opportunity to step up from the reserves (who were then Ridgeons) and with the greatest respect very few could adjust, the gap now is much wider (if say Spriggs or Bully were starting out in the reserves at say 18,19 would you want them to have another year or go and play proper football for a local Ridgeons team?)

Is the gap really that much wider, than when the first team were in Conference North and the Reserves in Ridgeons One/Premier ?  Yet there were still players  stepping up to fill in when the squad were struggling with injuries etc.

Who is to say that Fryatt with a good pre-season wont make Setch's starting 11 ? At the moment there is a right back postion up for grabs.  In answer to your question i would suggest he will learn more on the pitch than he will sitting on the bench.  I know of at least one top level Ridgeons club who are interested in taking him on a season loan. Now if that doesnt happen then you would assume Setch has big plans for the boy.

If a club really are interested in Fryatt (and no reason to doubt your source) I would bite their hands off.  Whilst I accept that the right back slot might be 'up for grabs', I think he is far from the finished article as a centre half, let alone trying to play him at right back.  We can't go into a season with players who can 'fill in' in the line up from the start.

So looking at the broader picture, if other players on the edge of the first team or the better reserves were offered spots with Ridgeons clubs what would be best for their development, a move/loan or another year in the reserves?

If, Tony ?

With the Club seeming running 2  teams under seemingly seperate umbrellas, who would have the say on if a Reserve team player were to go out on loan, the first team manager ?   anyway if there was no chance of moving up into the first team squad, why would the player leave on loan, when he could perhaps get a few quid by signing direct with a Ridgeons league club ?

Maybe in the long term we should have a feeder club in something like the Ridgeons League were we can farm out up and coming players, instead of running with a Reserve side. Therefore having players playing at a higher standard, in readiness for first team football.  I see Stamford have just done the self same thing and tied up with  UCL team.

Loopy. Fancy giving Wisbech a call? Seems a good idea to me, and as our Manager knows his way around there, it could suit both parties!

The reserve team is more or less its own club anyway. I think a sustainable thing for the club to do is to copy the Team Bury, Team Braintree, CRC format and get a Reserves team into the Ridgeons Divisions One.
Maybe its their intention to do this having applied for the Anglian Comb and Peterborough Leagues. In a few years time I wouldnt be surprised to see a 'Team Lynn'.

did the original question get answered why there are no reserve home  friendlies?Come on Mr Barnes you want our support so at least have the decency to give us the information we ask for.
