Manager Ian Culverhouse made three changes to the starting line-up that drew 0-0 with Leamington on Tuesday night with Simon Power, Ryan Jarvis and Michael Gash coming in and Sam Kelly, Tom Ward and Dayle Southwell dropping to the bench with Nathan Fox and Ryan Hawkins not included.
Gateshead’s preparations were hampered when ’keeper Bradley James was injured in the warm-up and Sam Guthrie was called upon to make his league debut.
A cagey opening saw neither keeper tested, the first shot of note coming from the visitors with Adam Marriott flashing a shot wide on 14 minutes.
Lynn went ahead in the following minute when Power intercepted Dominic Tear’s pass to Alex Nicholson and he sped through and roll the ball past Guthrie.
Marriott then had a shot blocked by Williamson and from the resulting Jones’ corner Rory McAuley headed over.
Another defensive mistake just before the half hour saw Power once again involved, this time taking advantage of a misplaced Mike Williamson pass to set up Marriott but Guthrie rushed out to block.
Heed’s best chance of the half fell to Jordan Preston who received a long pass from captain Nicky Deverdics, he beat Ross Barrows but his low centre just evaded the boot of Liam Agnew.
Lynn, who had pressured for much of the first half, had the last chance on the stroke of half time, Michael Gash heading Jones’ corner over the bar.
The home side started the second period on the front foot and Alex Street did well to save after a Jordan Preston cross had deflected off Aaron Jones.
The resulting corner from Greg Olley saw the home side level with JJ O’Donnell heading home.
The home side pressured but Lynn were still creating opportunities Power testing Guthrie from some 20 yards on 70 minutes.
Further chances fell to Gateshead, a block on the line by Chris Smith keeping out a Preston shot and Street producing a double save to keep the ball out following a corner.
The deciding goal came against the run of play with Lynn breaking from a home corner and Power got on the end of a long clearance and passing two defenders before sliding the ball home.
Gateshead had the last chance two minutes into injury time when O’Donnell was fractionally away from connecting with Tear’s cross.
