John Downie
Born in Lanark he played football as a member of the Lanark Air Training Corps and joined Bradford as an amateur in 1942, signing professional forms three years later.
After 33 goals in 86 league appearances for Bradford Park Avenue he was transferred to Manchester United in 1949 for £18,000 playing 116 games and scoring 37 goals before moving on to Luton in 1949 for £12,000
He later joined Hull and then moved onto Lynn, turning down Swindon to move to The Walks. He made 52 appearances in the 55-56 season scoring 21 goals.
The following season he made 41 appearances, scoring 13 goals.
He was retained for the 1957-58 season but never signed forms and was subsequently released - being signed by Wisbech manager Oscar Hold.
He left Wisbech the following season to return to the Football League with Mansfield Town. For Wisbech he played 68 matches, scoring 42 goals from the inside left position including a goal against Grantham Town in Wisbech's last match to be played on Christmas Day. Darlington, Hyde United, Stalybridge Celtic and Mossley. On retirement from football he became a newsagent in Bradford.
