Lynn Town visited Wisbech on Saturday in the final of the Walsoken and Wisbech Charity Cup, which was held over from last year, and on by the only goal of the match. Teams:
Wisbech: Blyth, Wanford, Willbye, Ward, Hart, Panton, Hill, Cozens, Barker, Burgess, Horn.
Lynn Town: Bedwell, Woodhouse, Massingham, Raper, Branham, English, Fakenbridge, Perigo, Pearman, Veal, Chapman.
Referee: Mr F Touch (Chatteris)
Lynn kicked off before a fair gate with the grass sufficiently long to be against good work. Wisbech were early attacking and Bedwell ran out to clear. Offside spoiled a nice movement by Lynn, but Veal subsequently forced a corner, which looked dangerous till Wanford cleared. Another corner came Lynnís way, and from Vealís kick Pearman headed by. Lynn exerted further pressure and the Wisbech goal had a narrow shave when Blyth had to run out and clear a clever wing shot by Chapman. At the other end Bedwell fielded a hot shot from Horn, but almost made a mistake with a shot from Barker just after. Another attack by the Lynn right resulted in Blyth tipping over the bar a strong shot by Pearman. After a quarter of an hour Panton provided an opening for Horn, but the winger overran the ball and Woodhouse cleared easily. Lynn came back, and after Blyth had saved soundly from Veal, Chapman shot yards over the bar. Wisbech forced two corners in succession and then Chapman broke away to give Blyth great trouble in clearing, and then Banham shot high. A free kick against Lynn again brought Bedwell out of goal. Massingham was injured in a Wisbech attack and was off the field for a few minutes. Upon his return, and after 27 minutesí play, Veal sent in a beautiful centre which Blyth failed to hold properly, and PERIGO cleverly turned it into the net for Lynnís first goal. Lynn attacked hotly shortly after this and Blyth made two great saves from Fakenbridge and Perigo. Wisbech had their chances but threw them away, the most noticeable being just before the interval, when Burgess had an open goal but, taking the ball in his stride, shot high over the bar. Later Cozens was through and on his own, but put yards wide. Chapman was badly fouled by Willbye a minute before half-time and had to be taken off the field.
Interval: Lynn Town 1 Wisbech Town 0
Wisbech opened the second half in vigorous fashion and fouls were given against them twice in quick succession. Lynn replied with a prolonged attack which culminated in Perigo heading just over the bar from a centre by Veal. Bedwell undoubtedly saved Lynn when he went full length to divert what seemed a certain scorer, and for a time the Lynn defence was hard pressed. Chapman was again injured by stopping a sharp shot from Willbye, but was able to resume. Lynn forced a corner, but Raper shot wide, and Wisbechís right wing raced to the other end to force a similar advantage. Burgess took the kick and placed the ball beautifully, but Massingham cleared well. After another corner on the other side Lynn raced away and Blyth was lucky in conceding a corner to a hot drive by Veal. The Wisbech right was responsible for a nice movement which resulted in Hart shooting too high, and the next minute the same player was yards out with an open goal. At the other end Blyth fisted away from Perigo and set the right wing going but Horn shot over the bar. Lynn were having most of the play for a time, and Perigo came very close with two fine shots, and Blyth had some luck in getting to a good header by Pearman. Wisbech had a wonderful chance of equalising when Burgess broke through on the wing and centred to Cozens who, although unmarked, shot hard over the bar. The next minute Hart shot yards wide. Wisbech were doing most of the pressing and the Lynn goal had several narrow shaves.
