A cracking move involving Lynn’s past and present managers set up an FA Cup third qualifying round tie at Ilkeston.
Gary Mills won the ball on the right, went on a 20 yard run before feeding Tony Spearing. He sent in a fantastic cross and Micky Nuttell was on hand to plant the perfect header inside the far post.
’I’hat was 11 minutes into extra time and Mills must have been wondering how his side had let it get that far. Although they didn’t play particularly well, the Linnets were a goal up after 16 minutes and Bromsgrove rarely threatened to change the scoreline.
But a mistake by captain Colin Hoyle let in Paul Moore and he rounded Steve Lewis to slot home the equaliser after 76 minutes. The ball had come from a long pass and Hoyle tried to steer it back to his keeper but totally missed his kick to let Rovers back in the game.
Nuttell had given Lynn the lead with the first serious attack of the match.
Spearing’s free-kick was cleared to Hoyle and he sent in a cross that Nuttell met. Visiting keeper Derek Dudley did well to get in the way of the shot but the ball spun back over the line.
Dudley then made a superb reflex save when Hoyle met Dave Puttnam’s centre on the volley.
In the second half. Moore got in Stuart Payne’s way and the latter could only fire a glorious chance past Lewis’ post. Moore sent the game into extra time and Lynn almost went ahead when substitute Corin Hardy headed against the bar from Puttnam’s cross.
