LYNNíS REWARD for this narrow FA Cup win over Eastern Counties League side Sudbury is a home tie in the second qualifying round against Clacton.
On Saturday Clacton overcame close ECL rivals Lowestoft 2-1. The match will be staged on Saturday, October 6.
But Lynn achieved victory at a cost, for goalkeeper Garry Steel was taken to hospital with a leg
injury after a 24th minute collision with Sudbury centre forward Jock Pirie.
This meant adjustments in the Lynn line-up. Malcolm Lindsey took over in goal with Nigel Smith moving to full back and substitute Trevor Painter taking over in the heart of the defence Painter having his first senior game of the season following injury.
Steelís injury seemed to spur on Lynn. They had been finding Sudbury difficult to handle and once Peter Raven had headed
in, but was penalised for pushing.
Lynn started moving more freely and two shots from the left by Clarke .and Elliot which Wade dived to save were a prelude to the goal.
It came in the 32nd minute after Clarke had been fouled. He took the kick himself and seemed to
be looking for
Frank Wignall, but the low kick went straight to Rudd who turned and in one flowing movement shot inside the near post.
Sudbury obviously wanted to test Lindsayís abilities as a goalkeeper, but they found the Lynn defence more commanding as the game went on.
Lynn should have made the game safe in the second half when they got into numerous scoring positions and then failed to knock the ball in.
A Wignall free kick "special" went only a foot wide and Doug Wade made the save of the match when he pounced on Ruddís header on the line. Two other close range headers from Clarke and Elliot both lacked
Sour note of the game came in the 63rd minute when Smith was booked by Lincoln referee G. R. Todd for a foul on Frost, when it seemed that the Sudbury player could well have been
penalised for obstruction.
This was unfortunately one of several decisions which mystified players - Rudd being another victim in the second half when he should have been awarded a penalty after being flattened as he prepared to go
up for a centre.
