King's Lynn 2 Beeston 3
18th April 1892
This match was played in fine weather on the Extension Walk field, on Easter Monday; it was advertised to commence at 10 a.m., but the game did not begin much before 10.30. There was a large show of spectators, the walks field being well lined.
Beeston won the toss and chose the goal near Avenue Road, having the sun at their backs.
Plowright kicked off, and the ball wan eosin carried into the visitors' quarter, but Richardson saved. Holland securing made a splendid run, but Shaftoe checked his progress, and passing the ball over to the left wing, Smith and Clarke showed some splendid passing The latter, when near the goal, centred splendidly, but Brown slipped and Cholerton kicked out. After the throw in, Lynn pressed, forcing Beeston
to give a corner, but Sneath kicked behind. From the goal kick the ball was taken down, by splendid combination of the Beeston forwards, to the Lynn goal, but
Freeman kicked behind. Clifton kicked off and Clarke securing made a nice run, and when near goal, centred splendidly, Robinson tried to save, but Plowright put the ball through, scoring the first for Lynn amidst great, cheering by the spectators. After the centre kick the ball was in a few minutes taken down to the Lynn goal and a goal was soon registered for the visitors. After the kick off again from centre, Clarke and Smith showed some good passing and worked the ball up into the visitors' quarters, but Chorlerton saved. The Lynn forwards, who were playing splendidly, were giving Richardson and Chorlerton plenty of work, forcing them to kick out. Forman at last secured and soon carried the ball into Lynn quarters, but he at last kicked behind. Clifton kicked off, but Money kicked out. After the throw in, Palmer secured but kicked over the bar. Later on, Brown made a line run down the field, passing to Smith who upon centering, kicked a little too far and Richardson kicked out. After the throw in, the ball was soon worked down to Lynn goal by the Beeston's left wing, Forman centering well, but Holland kicked the ball high over the bar. Play was here stopped- for a few minutes owing to Holland getting hurt. After the ball was thrown up, Brown secured, made a splendid run down and centered well, but none
of the Lynn forwards were near. Currier played splendidly, and was very conspicuous. Hands given against Lynn made tings look dangerous, but Clifton as usual saved splendidly. Boam made a capital run and passed to Smith, but Chorlerton kicked out. After the throw in the visitors pressed, giving the Lynn halves plenty of work. Beam's defence was conspicuous.
Currier at last secured and dribbled the ball capitally down and centered well, but Plowright kicked behind. Hands against Lynn. caused the Lynn forwards to fall hack ; Brown, however, secured, passed to Smith, who sent in a shot, but Robinson saved. Smith again secured, but kicked the ball over the bar. From the goal kick the ball wan rapidly carried near the Lynn citadel and a splendid shot sent in, which Clifton saved, but before he could throw the hall away Palmer tried to rush him through Clifton was, however, too nimble, and shaking Palmer off, safely dispatched the ball. Palmer was given offside and a penalty kick allowed. Nothing resulted, however, and half-time was called with the score 1-1.
On the whistle being sounded for the beginning of the second half, Palmer started ball and quickly brought it into the Lynn 25, but Shaftoe saved, and some good play was shown by Clarke, Brown, and Currier. Clarke had a good rundown the left, }wised to Brown who again panned to Carrier, he centred the ball nicely in front of goal and Plowright did the needful, thus notching second point for Lynn. From the centre kick Beeston attacked, but Holland kicked ever the bar. They continued for a time to press and Shaftoe in trying to clear gave a corner.
Nothing came of it however, but it was shortly followed by another corner off Boam, from the corner kick Smith secured and passed to Brown who ran down with the ball and passing neatly to Smith, he looked like scoring again, when Chorlerton kicked out to save a goal, and the play was quickly transferred to the other end of the field. Money saved in good style several times but the Lynn goal was kept in a state of siege and Holland at last got his opportunity and again the scores were equal. After the kick-off, play continued very even for a time, when a splendid attack was made upon the Beeston goal, but just as Currier was getting danger, one, he apparently collided with Chorlerton and fell. Play was stopped for a time and after the re-start Carney appeared to be lame, but still worked hard and attacked Beeston goal with energy, some pretty passing between Clarke, Smith, and Brown taking place. A corner was given which Smith kicked, and the goalkeeper fisted behind, the resulting corner kick was a failure, and from the goal kick, Beeston led off and attacked the Lynn citadel, Holland and Shaftoe kicking at the ball at the same time. Shaftoe got the hall away and received Holland's kick in a very inconvenient place and had to retire in great pain for a time. Currier also had been obliged to give up, although he had pluckily played as long as he could. With only nine men in the field, Lynn still held their own but Beeston were getting dangerous, and Shaftoe returned just in time to clear, and for a time
Lynn pressed, but Currier was badly missed, a good pass over to the right by Brown who apparently had not observed Currier was away, was lost and the ball returned to Lynn quarters, by good passing between the Beeston forwards and Foreman shot a goal. On the ball being re-started Lynn tried hard to equalise but only a few minutes were left for play and the game ended Beeston 3 Lynn 2.
