King's Lynn 5 Dereham 1
25th November 1882
This match for the first tie in the Norfolk Association Challenge Cup took place on the Walks, Lynn, on Saturday.
Operations were commenced at 3.15. The home team winning the toss elected to kick off and they immediately took the leather into the neighbourhood of the Dereham goal, a corner kick was soon obtained, but nothing definite resulted, and presently Dereham made a good run down, and. with a judicious kick, Hook sent the ball through, thus obtaining tint honours for the strangers.
The ball being restarted, the home team worked the leather down to the other end of the ground, and only owing to the good play of Gould, the Dereham goal-keeper, nothing serious resulted. The last named goal with repeatedly threatened, but Gould was always equal to the occasion.
Now Dereham succeeded in taking the bell to the other end of the ground, and a good, although unsuccessful, shot was made at goals, Dennis, the goal-keeper just putting the leather over with his hands.
Now, although Dereham were compelled to play on the defensive, and this they did exceedingly well, the next feature of importance was a corner kick for Lynn, and L K. Jarvis judiciously middled it, and Leeper succeeded in making a goal for Lynn. The rest of the first was all in favour of Lynn, but nothing definite resulted. After ends were re-reversed the superior play of the home team was visible; and ten minutes later Bullock middled the ball to L K. Jarvis, who now played exceedingly well, and presently the ball was sent through off Leeper's leg.
Next Woodham, with a fine kick, obtained another and this success was followed up by W. Smith and Wakelam making another goal each; and after seventy minutes' play the match resulted in favour of the home team by five goals to one.
For Lynn. Smith, L K. Jarvis, C. J. K Jarvis and Woodham played well; as also did Gould, Carr, Walker and Heading for Dereham.
