Thoughts on a nil nil draw yesterday at home to Hereford.
On a cold and darkish saturday afternoon in January this already had all the feel of a relegation scrap.
Both teams were short on ideas but were up for the game with a lot of tackles flying in and inconsistent decisions from the referee.
Best performances from Lynn included Wilson in defense ( voted man of the match ) with dare I say Mike Wright style headers throughout the game. Also Williams and Troso who both carried the ball forward on the ground and looked the most likely to unsettle the Hereford defense. Lastly an encouraging cameo from Forde-Brown before coming off injured at half-time.
For all the huff and puff probably a fair result.
Only my thoughts what did others take from the game ?
Thought a draw was a fair result, two poor teams and poor refereeing on a Saturday to forget. Agree re Wilson for MotM and Troso had a good game at left wing back once he realised Clements wasn't behind him. Disagreed with IC's analysis that we were in control first half, thought we looked completely disjointed, albeit this was understandable as we swapped to a back three and had different personnel returning / playing different roles. I thought we looked a bit better second half second half with more structure and Davies showed some good intent but the cold truth is we don't really have much of an attacking threat at the moment. IC mentioned this again in his post match interview and whilst he is making the best of what he has, the pleas for extra attacking options will only grow louder, lets hope they have been heard in Singapore.
We are 17th for a reason, when you can't score at home to the team second from bottom tells you everything. Nothing much between the teams, could have gone either way.
Davis looked a good addition to the squad and based on yesterday, should start at Telford. Agree with Tony, re IC post match interview. He keeps saying we are not a million miles away, well without any forwards we are. Surely a new forward has to come in very soon.
Trying to play out to full backs from goal kicks looked very iffy at times. Most times, we were closed down very quickly and made to hurry, often losing possession in dangerous positions, we didn't look comfortable doing it. I think we will stay above the bottom 4, which I guess has to be our main aim. Decent attendance considering our recent performances. Great save from Jones in the first half.
I could understand why IC wanted us to play out from the back rather than thumping it down the pitch only for the ball to come straight back but as comfortable as Doherty looked, it was a heavy pitch and we definitely 'overplayed' in our third a number of times in the first half. Having drawn Hereford out there was a real lack of movement in forward positions to exploit any space created which was disappointing. Maybe more games with the formation and with Doherty, RHJ and Davies all getting up to full fitness (and Marriott/Toll being available even if initially not for 90 mins) we can start to look a bit more threatening in possession?
Post match interview mentioned player who went somewhere else anyone get his name.
Wilson, yes. Williams,as usual. Force-Brown and Doherty did ok, and do look to have skill. We will stay up when everyone is fit and available, but might not if not. Need more skill in midfield and a slippery goalscorer, with Adam M still capable if the midfield is improved to give him opportunities.... Just my opinion!
