Title: home vs Yeovil (3rd Oct)
Post by: TonyM on September 29, 2020, 01:39:59 PM
OK, all the smoke signals are that the season is going to start this coming weekend, so with all the usual COVID caveats what are peoples views on starting 11 and prospects for the season - yes a FOOTBALL thread

Personally I still think we are a center half light and without Gash I do fear for us defending set pieces.  I think going forward we will still create chances even in a league above although whether Mazz can continue such a fantastic rate is unlikely at step 1 but still think he will convert his fair share, the rest of the forward line are hardly prolific so we really need King to weigh in to fill Henderson's goals from midfield and hopefully Carey will continue his development with more opportunities (the silver lining from Henderson's departure?).

I haven't watched any of the pre-season but I would go with:
            Pedro/Mair
Burrows, Smith, McAuley, Brown
      Richards, Jarvis, Kelly
                 King
          Loza, Southwell

leaving a bench of Jones, Clunan, Power, Carey and Mazz

Pretty sure IC will go with something much different but I just don't think we will have enough in midfield if we play Loza and Power together out wide and I just can't see Southwell being a threat on his own up front at this level.

Think Clunan is suspended.

TonyM, Southwell has been excellent at this level.  Take a peek at YouTube !  I donít think Jarvis will nowadays be quick enough at this level, but would be a good call to come on and help if weíre hanging on and under pressure.    So, I shall inform IC to pick this team vs Yeovil......  Street/Mair;  Burrows, McAuley, Smith, Brown;  Clunan, Richards, Kelly;  King; Power, Southwell.    I donít know the fitness levels of Clunan and Marriott, so Carey, Marriott and Loza  subs - taking a punt on Clunan.

Agree with TonyM...think we will be very vulnerable in central defence where for this level we lack pace and especially height. In the past couple of season s Lynn have played very open, be confident of the attacking prowess and almost accepting "you may score 2, but we'll score more ".
This year Lynn won't be so open in their set up
My starting 11 for Yeovil would be

Mair/Street, Jones, McAuley, Smith, Brown, Richards, Clunan, King, Loza, Power, Southwell.

Going for Jones over Barrow purely because of Covid situation up North and looking for consistency in back 4 over first half a dozen games, but could see Barrow instead of Richards as 3rd central defender and hence more pace in that area.

Wow.... where do you start with our first game at this level.

Loads to admire and Iím sure loads to work on.

The one big thing that the night showed was we can compete at this level.

Excellent performance.  We were quicker to the ball, and loose ones, all over the pitch for most of the game.  They had 20 mins dominance at start of 2nd half, but no more.  Everyone played so well.  I thought King looked the best player on the pitch - surprised he came off, but prob a fitness thing.  Still think Kelly will be good at this level, and Carey looked great.  Street 7;  Jones 8, McAuley 7, Smith 7, Brown 8;  Jarvis 6, Richards 6, Kelly 6;  King 8, Power 7, Southwell 6.  Subs Carey 8*, Marriott 8.....   We can do very well in this league.  Just need some stands and more terrace behind the goals, and another terrace where ther used to be between MIn Stand and Hospital End corner flag !,

How surreal was that! Watching KLTFC playing at this level with TV coverage whilst sat in my armchair in The Algarve. Would I have predicted all that 5 years ago? A fantastic effort by all concerned and a commendable performance against a decent team. I have followed the Linnets since 1967 but it is a long time since I saw them live. Let's hope we get more coverage as the season progresses and hopefully with some fans cheering us on. Performance-wise I thought that Carey looked extremely comfortable at this level and I think he will play a big part this season. Yesterday was proof that we can play at this level. COYL!

Dilly, strange how people see the same game through different eyes.   I thought  Jarv had an excellent game.   He did what he always does and made the game look simple.  As for  King, great player at this level but if anything he tried to do to much.  Looked over eager to make his mark.

Be interesting to see who becomes our regular keeper.  Street didnít do much wrong.  Think Mair will get the nod at some point and will make the Jersey his own.

Arron Jones, for me was outstanding.  Best game Iíve seen him have in Lynn colours.  Ditto Brown on the other side. Quality.   McAuley gave his all and was a rock. Smith... jury is out for me on him.  Got caught a couple of times with long punts down the middle.  Badly at fault on the 2nd goal.  Never looks  that comfortable with the ball at his feet.  The new lad from Sligo Rovers is needed.

Richards  ran his gonads off for the cause but was badly matched up in the box for Yeovilís first goal and never even got off the ground.   Power never really got the chance to use his pace, but we all know what he has in his locker.  Kelly put a decent shift in.  Couple of efforts from distance.  Did ok.

Southwell was certainly the man on the spot for our first goal, even if he was yards offside.   Not a huge fan.   Carey coming on made a massive impression with the game stretched.   Should have scored with just the keeper to beat.    Marriott did what Marriott does. One chance, one goal. Quick brain, quick feet.  2-2.

We certainly missed a fit Gash.  He would have held things up for us and brought others into play in the final 3rd.  Plus I would suggest he would have been the one to pick up their centre half for the first goal.  I would bet money he wouldnít have had that free header.

Loads of plusís and plenty where we can and will improve.   We will grow into this League with experiencing a few games.

What a great evenings entertainment.  Well done to the players, the Manager, his backroom staff and of course Stephen Cleeve for making it all happen.

I was surprised at our fitness levels, you would have thought that Yeovil were the part time team. Nobody had a bad game, I think Brown and Jones were a yard quicker than their wide players, Sam Kelly has a great eye, he tried to make things happen, Southwell is a big strong striker, he could be the new Gash, Sonny Carey, well he is certainly a prospect. Good start, roll on Tuesday!

Great to finally see the season start and to watch Lynn on the TV was some compensation for not actually being there, reaction to other NL clubs streams seems to have been 'mixed', so that is something that will evolve over the course of the season

On the pitch a continuation of IC's template, first half lots of possession and we opened them up a couple of times without testing the keeper, second half Yeovil upped their game and we lost control but proved we can still create opportunities, interesting comment from Grant Holt afterwards about the 'Mazz effect' in that the other players have more belief with him on the pitch (yesterday is unlikely to reduce that with another poacher's finish to earn the point)

Personally thought Richards was head and shoulders our MotM, yes could have done more for their first but should never have been marking their 'big' centre half (I did express my concerns about set pieces in the opening post) but did a fantastic job breaking up stuff in the middle of the park.  Back four still cause for concern and remains to be seen if IC eventually sacrifices elsewhere to bring Burrows in as the third centre half.  Lacked a bit in the final third but to be expected with the loss of Mazz, Gash and Henderson from last year and Loza injured so not sure how many of those on the pitch would be in our 'first XI' - can't fault Southwell's effort but isn't a lone striker, Kelly did what he has done since he arrived - showed some good touches but ultimately no end product, similar for King who found space well but never really used it (lack of options in front of him?) and Power looked out of his depth when he couldn't beat the full back or centre half for pace.  Jarvis made us tick first half but struggled when Yeovil upped the pace second half which was always the fear when we stepped up a level - can he still play at the pace required?  Carey and Mazz made a huge difference when they came on, happy to see Sonny given his chance and remains as positive as ever, yes a bit more composure needed for his chance but his drive got the the whole team back on the front foot and he will only get better.

So, what for the future, I thought last night emphasised all the strengths and weaknesses of this team - will will still create opportunities but there remains a soft underbelly for sides to exploit, particularly from set pieces.  I suppose the question is, much as previous years, can we convert enough of our opportunities to secure the points we need?  One thing is for sure bookies will be keep lengthening the odds on nil-nil draws involving King's Lynn Town

Yeovil played it tactically 1st half by sitting back deep and soaking up Lynn's attacking style. Came out 2nd half with an attacking attitude that caught us on the hop as they had not really mounted a formal attack phase (relying on breakouts 1st half).

Fortunately the Lads were not rattled by the first goal and worked steadily to get back into the game. Got 1 back then could not really do anything about Yeovil's thunderbolt for their 2nd. Couple of changes made a lot of difference and we chased for and got our 2nd to gain a point. Happy with the result and the experience will do us good.

I think Yeovil had done their homework and realised that we are an attacking team that can be caught out by the breakout counter-attacks. We are weak at defence in depth, especially on the counter-attacks with Jones and Brown forward on their wing attacking.

We need a solid back three even when we are playing during our corners - don't have all the eggs (players) in the penalty box (basket) getting in each others way. Whoever is left back in defence (Rory usually goes up for corners) needs to be able to tackle (like Quigs) and some, no names, are not really tacklers.

I would like to see Ross Barrows (please, not Burrows) in place of Chris Smith who does not seem too comfortable with the ball.

Very fair summary Tony.  Still think the ex Norwich  Centre Half Is coming in from Sligo when their season ends in 3 games time. With   The Squad numbers We are missing a No 4.

On the subject of Hendo I wonder if he is having any regrets.  Two 4-1 defeats since he joined The Greens.  Have a feeling he would have enjoyed himself last night.

Apparently when he is available is more to do with their cup games than league games. If they get to the final, it could be November before he appears in Lynn's colours.   :dontknow:
