Title: Indecent Proposal
Post by: Captain Sensible on October 07, 2020, 08:56:25 PM
Football Chairmen are still waiting to get their hands on the taxpayer's money.

Ollie Bayliss
National League clubs are still awaiting news of how the Government's funding will be shared.
The League has been promised £10 million over the next 3 months.
A decision on how the grants will be distributed will be decided by the National League, the FA & the Government.

Football Chairmen will keep taking if others keep giving.

Rick Parry, chairman of the EFL, claims the Championship, League One and League Two sides need an injection of £250m to survive the financial damage caused by coronavirus and has met with Premier League chief Richard Masters to discuss a package.
EFL clubs are in desperate need for a cash bailout amid the coronavirus crisis,  but a previous meeting between Premier League and EFL didn't reach a resolution.
Several League One and Two clubs are struggling to pay wages this month but Premier League clubs have little sympathy with wealthy Championship Club owners.
Premier League club bosses are resisting the demand of a £250 million bailout for the EFL because Championship Club owners are worth more than £32 billion combined.

By my calculations it would only take about  .7% of the combined wealth of the Championship Chairmen to sort out the problem that these Limited Company Football Clubs find themselves in.The vast majority of the Chairmen of these Clubs want sole ownership of the Clubs and to run them on an individual basis. If that's how they feel about football and its Clubs then let them let them run it themselves and keep their grubby hands off other peoples money. It's obvious they don't need it.These are not OUR clubs, even though we support them. They usually belong to individual people or their families and thats how most of them intend to continue to operate. Why are others expected to support Millionaire/Billionaire owned Clubs when they so obviously have money available to support matters themselves.

Looks to me that the Govt may be backtracking on the amount of money being given to The National League.  £1.6 million to the Arts, hundreds of millions to hospitality but the League can't even get £ 3 million a month! Shifting sands from either the DCMS or The Treasury DANGER

As the unemployment rate creeps up, the government will find it an ever harder sell to justify giving taxpayers money to clubs, many of whom have multi-millionaire/billionaire owners, who were active in the transfer market at the same time as saying they needed a bailout.

That's a very fair point LL.  The Premier League is no longer affordable to the average working man, it has got completely out of control. Most people who claim to support a top team are only in fact followers of a team as they never actually get to see that team play due to the ridiculous prices to line the pockets of the rich.

Very much so. Sadly, at some non league clubs it seems to be going in the same direction. Some are in danger of turning Supporters into just Followers.

It does seem these wealthy Individual  Club owners are always looking for others to indulge them in their hobby.  I think as a Country we also need to very careful on the pressure that is placed on the public purse strings.

Many people seem to think that the Chancellors wallet is bottomless. It's not, and what money he has in his wallet is OUR money!

Many of these Clubs have been living a hand to mouth existence (not my words) and were in financial trouble before the Pandemic.

As has been said before, "football is the most important of the unimportant things". Any money that is spent on football clubs (and you could say especially badly run football clubs) is money that could be spent in more important areas.

I hope every Club is saved and lives to fight another day, but when you see the wealth that the people who control football at all levels have at their disposal(or as in some cases, claim to have), I would much rather them sort matters out themselves and not rely on taxpayers money. There is no doubt whatsoever that there is enough money in the game, be it Clubs, their owners or highly paid players, to be able to rectify the financial shortfall some clubs are experiencing.

Problem is that this Gvnmt keeps making announcements and pronouncing initiatives but they are not what they first seem, get modified en route and are not properly followed through...there are so many examples.....test and trace app,
employment support schemes, bike repair vouchers, green housing grants, new jobs in the green economy.........a lot of bluster and not much substance and very often not sufficiently well targeted.
I personally wouldn't make any predictions as to what our club will get to help it survive, until the money is in the bank account.

They are chasing a moving target. Its a nightmare for all of us.

With regards to football and the NL, I believe that the Govt said that they would arrange a package worth 20 Million. If so, this could involve all sorts of things. e.g. tax breaks, reduction in paying VAT, a delay in paying tax, cash etc. Whatever it is, everything has to be costed.
.
What's the betting that Club Chairmen thought that it would a straight 20 Million cash!   :dontknow:

It's time they (Gvnmt) put the flesh on the bones. Some National League clubs said they had two weeks to survive, a week ago. As you so rightly said B and G they are always chasing and reacting, never ahead of the game and pro active and it IS a nightmare for all of us, this lack of any semblance of a clear path, for some more than others

If, as SC is suggesting the Govt bail out money is now in doubt will we see a battening down of the hatches ?   I see Slough are down to 13 fit players and canít afford to bring the n extra bodies.  Lucky we have a 20 man squad to go with.

Don't think so Mall...think clubs are waiting on Gvnmt bailout to see what they can afford.......gvmt are just behind the curve on this (there's a thing) and need to get into gear.

Maybe the waiting is over.

It appeared on Clubs website a short while ago that we were signing a  Kyle Barker from Posh, then it was taken down.    :dontknow:

Not 100% sure on this one, but I think he's a Lynn Lad.

There was a comment from the Peterborough chairman a few weeks ago to say that they (Peterborough) would cover the wages of all players on loan at clubs.

Don't know if that's the case with Lynn, presume as he said it it would be? Just a shame some have to find a negative with every positive.

Maybe one for the Clubs media department to comment on.   :dontknow:

Good and positive deal if it is the case.  :scarf:

Nem donít see the new lad being a stop gap for McFadden.  It seems he is more a midfield player.  Maybe coming in to give Jarvís legs some rest.   Canít see any other midfield position we are short on numbers.

With this signing I guess the Chairman wonít be stating the club will be going pop anytime soon.   Certainly sends out all the wrong messages when you are after a hand out from the Government.

Think there will be plenty of rotation of squad with games coming thick and fast....think I read Loza, Power and King all nursing tight groins, Jarv will be due a rest soon, Clunan and Mazz still working towards full fitness

.....and infact with the new addition from Peterborough and Callan McFadden, the numbers will be back to what was originally intended, following Hendo's unexpected departure.
