General Discussion / Elephant in the room?
« on: January 19, 2025, 11:00:45 PM »
…..is Jonny Margetts. The manager and the Press don’t seem to want to talk about him. Have our local  timid reporters been asked not to ask about him?
For a player who has had more clubs than Arnold Palmer it’s quite worrying. Only played 15 games but still top scorer with eight goals.
We are playing well but missing so many chances. It really would be a shame to miss out due to the lack of a striker.

The silence regarding JM is now deafening. Still it’s par for the course now!

Couldn't agree more Doug. Another strange line up. Barnes and Crane on the bench, probably our 2 most creative players. Young Tom Wilson makes one big mistake at Scunny and is dropped. another defensive line up expected? Coulson has not been fit all season, been a good player in the past but now off the pace and should retire at 36 yrs old.
Looks like Hmami is expected to be creator and striker. Glad I didn't travel.
Do we know what the Margetts injury is? He had a thunderous look about him when he was hooked against Needham - is he really injured or has AL fallen out with yet another skilful player?
Press very silent about him?

Thanks for that GS.  Cody was the engine room in midfield, we are already missing him. Probably why Shields were camped in our half for most of the match.  He was the legs for our 38yr old asst manager. :oldman"
So no announcement by the club. No statement about Joe? Did someone say the club media was better? We only get highlights when the opposition films the match?
Manager grumpy about travelling up north? Did someone tell him we’re in the south division? Asst Refs are terrible because they flag for the for the ball going over the goal line? The ref was terrible for not adding enough time?

I think the constant travelling four days a week plus match days  is starting to show - plus three straight defeats because the opposition were the better teams.
Any thoughts anyone?

Hav’nt  been to the Walks for a few weeks due to illness but it was obvious earlier in the season that next season we need faster younger defenders.
I’m so pleased my prediction of 49/50 points was wrong and we should now survive. AL has done what was required after a faltering start.
I am aware the fat lady hasn’t sung yet but let’s look forward to a new season of expansive attacking football in 24/25.

Nice to see a defender with pace and skill re-joining, if only for one month. Could well be the difference between the drop and staying in the NLN!

Thought Sam was amazing for a player 38 yrs old in April. Must keep Jonny fit. Without his goals it would have been a another draw. No contact football in training please!

Jonny Margetts gets on in the 87th minute?

Disappointing to drop two points after Tuesday’s excellent result. On the plus side we move out of the bottom 4 ( thanks Sport) and the gates seem to be on the up at 800.  Can’t complain about the fans not turning up.

Poor crowd in my view, though I suppose there are a few people still put off paying £18 for National North football and a few probably staying away because of Cleeve

When you consider that we have only scored 2 goals in the last 7 home games, I think our attendances are quite reasonable. AL is quite happy to play boring defensive football at home, in interview with Radio Norwich City, sorry, Radio Norfolk he said he was happy with the performance "at least we didn't lose". It's looking like our survival depends on good away wins and some home draws.

Thanks for that Tony, what a Chairman/owner and manager! They keep selling players for decent money and still climb the league. Good example of how to run a football club.

It’s certainly good to see the academy expanding. Think Alex Cross has a good eye for spotting and nurturing young talent.
What I find difficult to understand is where is all the money coming from to pay the Coaches, provide the kits, transport etc etc. AC must be full time as is Josh Coulson. All this expense for a club that was going out of business a few weeks back? Answers on a postcard ………

So we got that vital 3 points win at last! I wasn’t there so could not possibly comment on the merits of our play but thank goodness we now have a fresh start to see if we can put a winning run together. Lots of draws and the odd loss will no longer suffice if we want to stay in the NLN. Looking at the remaining fixtures ( only 14 remain) and realising we need at least 50 points to be sure of survival, I’ve had a stab at seeing where those points might come from, trying to be realistic and not too optimistic. So here goes and you can tear this apart at your will ( as I know you will any way)!
                             Pts
          Alfreton A Dr   1
         Brackley A Lose 0
         Farsley C H Win 3
         S Shields H Dr.  1
         Blyth Sp. A Dr   1
         Bishops S A Win 3
         Rushall O H Win 3
        Tamworth. H Lose 0
        Scunthorpe A lose 0
        ScarboroughH Dr 1
         Banbury.     A Dr 1
         Peterb Sp.   H Dr 1
         SpennymoorA Dr 1
         Chorley.     H Lose 0

                           Total 16 added to 32 we have = 48 (probably 2 pts short).  Winning 3 Drawing 7 Losing 4

This also assumes Margetts plays every game and scores at least seven

What do you think? - Don’t have sleepless nights-I’m hopefully wrong anyway.

FC, obviously lots of twists and turns to come but overall 12 points between now and Easter will probably keep us in the mix although probably not safe.  I would however hope for a few more than four points from the final five games but by that point it will be who handles the pressure the best.  The hope is that Margetts can prove the difference as more often than not it is goals scored that digs teams out of the mire rather than clean sheets.

Yes Tony, I reckon that the predicted run of 12 points from 7 games before Easter is vital to give us confidence before the final run in of six games. It’s vital that Margetts remains fit (and is selected). My main fear is AL’s reluctance to start games with either Hughes or Rogers on a regular basis and is why I worry about the lack of creativity for Margetts in those last few games but as everyone says there will be many twists and turns.
