FA Cup – who would you fancy away?

With the FA Cup First Qualifying Round taking place this weekend, I had a look through the ties to see who might make an interesting away day if they get through and end up in our part of the Second Qualifying Round draw.

There are obviously plenty of clubs we could potentially get, and exactly where the FA draws the regional line for Lynn remains to be seen, but there are definitely a few names that caught my eye.

Lewes would probably be right near the top of my list. The Dripping Pan looks a cracking old ground and Lewes itself has plenty of proper pubs, so that seems made for an FA Cup away day.

Faversham Town would be another good one – an old Kent market town, plenty of pubs and a smaller non-league club that we wouldn't normally get the chance to visit.

St Albans City would also appeal. Good town for a few drinks beforehand and Clarence Park is another proper traditional ground.

Then there are the seaside possibilities such as Ramsgate, Margate or Whitstable Town. Any of those on a Saturday would make for a decent full day out and, for most of us, somewhere completely different to the usual National League North trips.

Dulwich Hamlet would be interesting as well. A very different sort of away day, plenty of places around South London beforehand and likely to be a decent atmosphere.

And then there's the one we were talking about at the weekend...

Jersey Bulls!

They're still in the competition and however unlikely it might be that the regionalisation gods ever give us Jersey away, just imagine it.

Flights or ferry, probably an overnight stay, pubs, football and a weekend in Jersey.

Darlington Away Coach – Saturday 5th September

Away coach travel for the trip to Darlington is now on sale.

It would be good to see this one get the numbers needed nice and early, especially after the Hebburn coach unfortunately didn't get enough bookings to run.

£25 isn't bad at all for a trip of that distance, and it saves the long drive there and back.

So if you're thinking of going to Darlington, please book as soon as you can rather than leaving it until the last minute.

The booking process has changed from the first couple of away trips. You now pay for your seat when booking rather than registering your interest first.

A minimum of 25 bookings are required for the coach to run. If that number isn't reached, everyone who has booked will receive a full refund.

Chester FC away – Saturday 15th August

Bit of déjà vu for our first away game of the new season — Chester was also our final away game of last season.

Thankfully this time it is a rather more civilised 3pm kick-off, rather than the 12:30 start we had in April.

There is a supporters coach for this one. The minimum number has been reached, so the coach is confirmed as running and the remaining seats are now available to buy for £30. Depart time is 9am.

For anyone making their own way, Chester play at the Deva Community Stadium, Bumpers Lane, Chester, CH1 4LT. ([1])

The following places to eat/drink and travel information have been generated by AI as usual (and where it found the information).

TL;DR plan

Car parking

This is one thing that is different from our visit in April.

For that game, parking had to be pre-booked because part of the normal parking area was occupied by a circus and a big crowd was expected.

That was a special arrangement for that fixture.

Chester's current visiting-supporters information says there is a large car park at the stadium costing £5. ([2])

So unless Chester announce something different specifically for Saturday, drivers should be able to use the normal £5 stadium parking.

It is probably still worth arriving reasonably early — first home game of the season against a side that brought a decent following there only a few months ago could make it busier than a normal Saturday.

Pubs & food

Unlike our last visit, with its 12:30 kick-off, there should be plenty of time for a proper pre-match stop.

Town Crier
City Road, Chester, CH1 3AE

Probably the easiest option, particularly for anyone travelling by train. It is directly opposite Chester railway station, opens at 9am on Saturday and food is served from 9am until 9pm.

It is very much a sports pub, with plenty of screens, and does breakfast as well as the usual burgers, pub food etc. ([5])

Old Harkers Arms
1 Russell Street, Chester, CH3 5AL

A better choice if you fancy something a little less chain-pub-ish.

It is a well-known canalside pub near the city centre, opening at 10:30am. Brunch is available from opening, with the main menu from midday. ([7])

Good option for food and a couple of drinks before heading out towards the stadium.

The Cellar
19–21 City Road, Chester, CH1 3AE

For anyone more interested in good beer than a big lunch, The Cellar is another option near the station.

It opens at 12 noon on Saturdays and describes itself as an award-winning beer bar. ([6])

Blues Bar – at the ground

Chester have a bar at the front of the Main Stand called The Blues Bar.

However, their own away-fan guide says whether away supporters are admitted can vary from fixture to fixture, so I would not rely on it without checking first. ([2])

Food inside the ground

If you do not bother going into Chester beforehand, food is available inside the stadium. Away-ground guides list the usual pies, burgers and hot dogs in the away end. ([8])

Coach travellers

As the coach will drop us at the ground, the slight catch is that the stadium isn't in Chester city centre.

If there is a decent amount of time before kick-off and a few want to go into town, a taxi is probably the simplest option. Chester railway station is about 2.5 miles from the ground, which gives a reasonable idea of the distance involved. ([2])

If time is tighter, staying around the ground and seeing whether away supporters are being allowed into the Blues Bar may make more sense.

Travelling by train

Chester railway station is about 2.5 miles from the Deva. ([2])

From the city centre, Chester say the 10A bus passes Bumpers Lane, leaving approximately a half-mile walk to the stadium. ([2])

Otherwise a taxi from the station/city centre is probably the easiest option, particularly if there are a few of you to split the fare.

For anyone looking at going to Brackley away, the club are currently taking registrations of interest for official coach travel.

It doesn't appear to have been posted on the club's social media yet, but the registration page is live on TicketCo:

The club are still getting used to the new TicketCo system and have said that after the Brackley game they intend to give supporters much more notice about away travel and include more information in the original announcements.

I'll post this on here - then me and everyone else can see how right or wrong I was come the end of the season - but as we all know from last season football's a funny game.

South Shields would be my favourites. They were only just behind Fylde last season and I can't see them being too far away again.

Morecambe could easily win it on footballing ability and have made some very good signings, although there still seems to be enough going on off the pitch to make me slightly wary of putting them top.

Macclesfield should be up there again, while Hednesford are probably the really interesting side. Back-to-back promotions normally makes you think survival, but they seem to have plenty of ambition and are being tipped to do very well.

King's Lynn

I've probably got us higher than quite a few predictions I've seen, but I actually think Caddis has put together a pretty decent squad.

It's obviously a huge rebuild and it may take a while for everyone to settle, but bringing in players like Aaron Jones, Zak Mills, Ryan Tunnicliffe and Kwame Thomas gives us a lot more experience. There are also some younger/newer players who could turn out to be very good signings.

For me, seventh and sneaking into the play-offs is realistic.

The biggest question is probably goals. If someone can step up and score 15+ then I could easily see us finishing higher than seventh. If we struggle for goals again, then we're probably looking more towards mid-table.

Either way, I'd be very surprised if we're anywhere near the relegation battle this time.

Dark horses

Harborough are worth watching. Signing Britt Assombalonga at this level is certainly interesting and they could be much better than your average promoted side.

Oxford City are another I think could surprise a few, and Worksop are capable of having a good season if things click.

I'd also put Lynn in the dark-horse category. Going from 19th to challenging for the play-offs sounds a big jump, but with the number of changes Caddis has made I don't think last season's position tells us much about this team.

So my main calls:

Champions: South Shields
Promotion contenders: Morecambe and Macclesfield
Dark horse: Harborough
King's Lynn: 7th
Bottom four: Spalding, Southport, Hebburn and Bedford

When we do get some new players I think it would be useful (and now with the new club website) to have a little 30 second video clip with the player introducing themselves - Saying there Name, Position and maybe where they played before, where they're from etc.

Hopefully the media team might read this and think it's a good idea too.

I wouldn't be ripping everything up, even if extra funds are available this summer.

For me the first thing is the manager. I'd keep Caddis. He came in with one job, which was to keep us up, and he did it. It wasn't pretty, and there were still some poor results in there, but I don't really see the sense in surviving and then immediately starting again from scratch unless there is something behind the scenes that makes it obvious he isn't the right fit. Give him a full pre-season, let him build a squad properly, and then judge him after 10 or 12 games next season.

If there is a bit more money there, I still wouldn't be throwing it around for the sake of it. I'd use it to improve the spine of the team properly rather than ending up with a bigger budget and the same problems. For me that means a proper centre-forward who can get 15 to 20 goals, a dominant centre-half, and a more athletic midfielder. That feels a lot more important than making lots of flashy signings.

As for the current squad, there are a few I'd definitely be trying to keep around. Hall-Johnson, Crane and Morgan Williams are all players you can build around at this level, and I'd be keeping Wilson as well. Chapman did enough for me to keep the shirt too (likely an unpopular option for many). Then there are others I'd keep if the terms are sensible, but I wouldn't be handing out deals on sentiment. We stayed up, which is the main thing, but we still finished in a relegation fight, so I don't think the answer is to keep almost everyone and hope for better.

Up front is where I think the biggest decisions are. We need more goals from the actual forwards. Too much of the threat came from wide areas and midfield, which usually tells you something is off. So if extra money is there, that's where I'd spend it first.

So overall, my view would be: keep the manager, keep the better core of the squad, be ruthless with some of the weaker or ageing options, and use any extra funds that are available on quality in key positions rather than just a bigger squad. If we get that right, I don't think top seven next season is unrealistic.

I've looked at public transport and trains look awkward because of the bank holiday engineering work, but this one is still more doable than most because the X1/excel bus runs through from King's Lynn to Peterborough, with buses up to every 30 minutes Monday–Saturday daytimes and up to hourly on public holidays. That said, it is also only about an hour by car, so this is a very straightforward away for drivers too.

* Hot food in the ground is also regularly mentioned in away guides, with Football Ground Guide noting hot and cold food served at the ground on matchday and that the clubhouse is an excellent choice for a meal and pint before the game. ([9])
* Charters is the best shout if you want to make more of a day of it in the city centre — it is a well-known Peterborough pub with a big beer garden, real ales and food service. ([6])
* The Brewery Tap is another strong city-centre option — award-winning ales, Thai food and Friday food service from 12 noon to 10.30pm. ([7])
* Away-day verdict: for most fans, especially if it is your first away day, I'd keep this one simple — park at the ground, have a drink/snack in the Turbines Tavern, and enjoy an easy first trip. If you want more of a pub day, head into the city centre first and then drive out to the ground. (That final bit is my judgement based on the setup.)

Public transport

* Trains: National Rail are showing bank holiday engineering work, including buses replacing trains between King's Lynn and Cambridge North over the Early May Bank Holiday period. ([2])

I asked AI what it thought would be the final standings in the National League North - with a special focus on King's Lynn. I'm posting it here as it will be interesting to see if it gets any of it correct.

Here's my best estimate for the final National League North table from where things stand on 25 March 2026.

I'm treating this as a forecast, not a prediction with certainty. I've based it mainly on the current standings, games in hand, overall points-per-game, second-half form, and for King's Lynn specifically the difficulty of the six remaining fixtures. The current table has Fylde on 85 from 39 and South Shields on 84 from 39, with Kidderminster third on 69 from 38; King's Lynn are 16th on 49 from 40.

Why I've nudged King's Lynn up to 14th rather than 16th: their recent trend is better than their full-season position suggests. In the second-half table they rank 3rd, behind only South Shields and Fylde, while their overall place is still 16th.
