General Discussion / Re: Mick Wright
« on: January 29, 2016, 06:52:06 PM »
BURY Town (then in 2nd tier of Football League) via Len Richley, assistant manager 1965, tried to sign Mick and the letter privately to Mick asked him to recruit David Brookes too! If Mick turned it down don't tell David!  Mick decided his life in Kings Lynn was more appealing and so history was made

It was great to see Mick on stage and typically determined to walk on unaided!!
It was good to hear him on video but in his very, very modest way never mentioned his achievements or service over 20 yrs.
What was a LITTLE disappointing was no mention was given to his records 1145 games; no bookings, 400+ consecutive games etc so young people maybe wondered what his lifetime achievement was. Plus saving man in Ouse; business in town for 30 years etc!!
I didn't feel need to stand to show great appreciation for an exceptional kind nice Man!!
Good on those who did!!
Won't see one like him very often!!

General Discussion / Re: Lynn v Kettering highlights and interview

It sits a self fulfilling prophesy when the 'now' leaseholder has no interest in football and utilises the hire and bar as a Personal Income with only gates and commercial advertising(Gary Setchell responsible now) supporting Team function.
Fine for 4 years playing budget way above the League level! Now hit on equality of League standing the budget is fragile as gates become an issue!
Football is a game of chance made less so over a season when quality players will prevail.
At present a local focus(well overdue) now needs time and attention to coaching the players and team!!
UNTIL a sugar daddy or a group of business people take on this Club as was (1979-84 & 2000-2005) the Club will sink whilst the lease holder can concentrate on his real business and cream off an income at supporter or hiring cliental!!

General Discussion / Re: Mick Wright Freedom of King's Lynn petition

This man played 400+ games consecutively and on a Wed Night was seriously injured with a ruptured spleen. He was in Hospital and on the Friday tried to discharge himself so as to keep his run going. He was rarely injured in 1150 + games and altho' he was booked once the ref rescinded it at end of game as he thought it unfair. No bookings in that career and played til 50 at Watton after leaving Lynn.

Non of his team mates complained either!
More the environment he entered; Reg Davies side-lined ; Manager / director Taffy Williams (director) talking rubbish; Laurie Brown (nightmare) and in amongst that the team dominated games early season and couldn't get results! Brown perpetuated that and Cliff Jones detested him from his day at Spurs as he was a braggart. Finally would not play for him and went to Bedford!!  Not a good time for Lynn!!

He was a pleasure to know and always worked his socks off; did well when he went to Bedford. Money was important to him as he had Butchery business and partner scammed him of every penny. His commitment showed thro' at Cambs City (we lost after battering them) early season when he came off with both shins bleeding! He was at the end of his career and not as his heyday but still gave 100% Good Man!
There were idiots of directors who squandered money and Lottery embezzlement! When Len Hall took over he said fraud squad were keen to investigate. Sold 6 houses cheap too! What would they fetch today?

Reg Davies!! A classy player manager 65-71! Mal Lindsay says Reg laid on 90% of his 300+ goals.  Missed 2 Cup Finals at Newcastle; Arsenal 12th Man; Man City tonsillitis! Playing for Wales v England at Wembley Jmmy Murphy gave team talk and did not mention Reg or Duncan Edwards. Going out Reg asked why?  The response was f Edwards gets it get out of way as you may get hurt! This Man swapped shirts with Edwards and could have sold it but donated it to Man Utd Museum!!! Cliff Jones was a friend of Reg and that's how he signed for Us! When Brown took over from Reg in weird circumstances he soon left as he hated him from Spurs days with a vengeance!!

Yes; Gaughran, Dwyer, Mulready, Fryatt went to Norwich , Cambridge etc but the links with schools, college, etc meant there were tabs on their names.
Gaughran released by Norwich at 15 yrs old and in Lynn's 1st Team t 16 yrs old. He went on to a contract at Peterborough and s now gracing Lynn a mature player. He made good friends at Kings Lynn FC and CWA which s a draw!
The point is that the Community Programme and Youth FC  have the contacts.
Hilliard, Edge, went to those Clubs because Lynn ignored them!! But they are enjoying playing for their local team now!!  You accept that Friend, Street, Yong started at Wisbech; similar to the Rider's, Wiles brothers and McManus but Lynn benefitted from local contact!!
More available contact coaching, training etc.
And tonight the Community game v Histon is where it starts!!

Is t all about the playing at National League or whatever??
How about Loyal Support 300-500 and working within the Community to develop our own players!!
Put money into good Local Training / Coaching facilities (Lynnsport) working with College / Schools / Youth FC in area to develop players.
In recent years; yes Dwyer, Heath Preston / Stocker have gone to pastures new but only recently the Fryatts, Mulready, Street, Hilliard, Yong, Edge, etc are coming on!  Ryan Fryatt now is a mature young player; don't denigrate Street as all keepers make cock ups(Hart v Norwich)!
The first priority is work in the Community which has been neglected in past 5 years!! Now Gary Setchell is making that effort! Its the way forward for Kings Lynn (outback town) and the Easthall, Johnston, Adams Defty's, and remember the 50's with many local players donning the shirt.
Think LOCAL with the odd maturity of Stevenson, Bircumshaw, Kabia, Cope etc!!  Keep working hard on our Community Gary!!

Well; after 51/2 years there is the obvious rewards (note Mr Chapman)  for introducing local players with interest and intent!! Patience is the virtue as they will have highs & Lows!
