General Discussion / Re: Comings and goings?

I said it last year, Jamie Stevens from Holbeach FC would be a great signing at the back.

But if he didn't want Spalding's travel, I doubt he'd want trips to Devon with us. Shame as he is one of the best defenders in the area.

As far as battling midfielders, be interesting to see if Culverhouse could use his links to get someone like Aransibia from Norwich's youth set up. Everyone benefited from the McWilliams loan, so be good to get a couple of talented youngsters in. Can't have a whole team of them, but 1 or 2 hungry young professionals could be a real boost.

Street - Best Goalie in the League
Fryatt - Much improved defender and attacking wingback
Yong - Solid left back and attacking wingback
Ward T - Good Central defender
Ward C - Shows good skills, needed for sub and stand in for injuries
Gaughran - Coaching and steady defender
Castellan - Good Central defender
Clunan M - Midfield General
Marshall - Good Midfield
Hawkins - Wing or Striker
Edge - needed for sub and stand in for injuries
Harnwell - Shows promise and needed for sub and stand in for injuries
Shipp - Shows good skills, needed for sub and stand in for injuries
Warburton - Lively Left winger
Zielonka - Can play Left or Right Wing and can also play Right back and attacking wingback (Utility Player and asset as a sub)
Hilliard - Wins high balls - needed for sub and stand in for injuries
Pearson - Need a second Goalie

Need 2 new Strikers (Mettam + 1?)

Only problems are - Who will decide to leave rather than stay and Who will Ian Culverhouse decide he does not want to stay?

I think Edge will either go or be dumped.
Hilliard may be dumped along and Gaughran who may well leave

Given Edge had his contract extended 5 days ago, I doubt he's going to be released.

I'd have:

Street
Yong
T Ward
Fryatt
Castellan
Zielonka
Marshall
Clunan
Hilliard

With:
Edge
Harnwell
Shipp
C Ward

Being integrated in further from the reserves, but probably still a bit pre-mature to fully promote them from the reserves, as we've all seen what that did for Edge's confidence this year.

Having said that, unlike previous years, there isn't anyone in my eyes that need's to be shown the door as being totally outclassed. I'd be content with seeing any of this year's players again next year.

With the season now done can we expect to hear of Culverhouse's retained list anytime soon ?

Or will they wait until after the Cup Final?

So contract list is: Street, Hilliard, Hawkins, Edge, Tom Ward, Warburton, Castellan, Gaughran, Mettam
Ian Culverhouse says there will be a number of players leaving during the summer.
I assume those on contracts will stay, Mettan to be decided, so who will be going?
Yong, Zielonka, Clunan, Marshall?

Out of those not on contract, there aren't actually any in my mind who are obvious candidates for release.

Yong's as good as any full-back in the league, and did a decent job for a lot of the season playing out of position in a back 3.
Marshall and Clunan are very capable midfielders.
And Zielonka has proved himself a consistently performing utility player.

20+ goal a season striker aside, there isn't a glaring weakness. Just need to get the team playing more consistently.

Having said that, I do hope we get one or two class apart signings for next year. I'd be disappointed if they are largely players of a similar standard to what we've already got, as Everington has turned out to be. The performance of the reserves has also shown that we don't need signings to fill out the bench. Just a couple of stars.

Speaking of people not understanding economics, either he's planning a fall in attendance, or his sums don't add up.

In the mostrtecent notes, he said that the price increases will result in 10000 extra for the playing budget next year.

If we average our attendance to 500 (I know it's slightly higher) and suggest a 100 people a match get free entry (I doubt it's that high) a 23 game season and a 2 price rise, not accounting for Cat B games you get

400*2*23= 18400 extra

Either there's more free entrants than would seem credulous, he's planning for a fall in attendance, he's raising proces to cover losses, rather than invest or he's plucking numbers out of thin air.

General Discussion / Re: CLUNAN
« on: April 18, 2017, 06:54:05 AM »
Clunan is decent.

as Paddygray says, he tries the Hollywood ball a bit too often, but I think at the moment, he is trying to do too much.

We need (lack) a real nasty, hardworking ball winning midfielder who is happy to do all the "dirty" bits of the game, win the ball and pass it to somebody like Clunan who can then create.

A bit like Makelele at Chelsea or Nigel de Jong at City used to do

Quigley!

You get the feeling Everington was meant to be a Quigley type player, and he hasn't reqlly cut the mustard. Now he's back, Marshall can play the DM role well, but he's more hardworking than nasty.

To give a bit of context to the price rises, two championship teams, Huddersfield and Wigan, had adult season tickets on sale for 179 this year.

http://m.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/37984745

Given the reaction, it seems that this price rise is likely to end up reducing, rather than increasing the playing budget next year.

And interestingly, Chippenham Town have all but won the league with admission prices the same as our current charges. It seems like Cleeve has misjudged his market.

If you buy season ticket for 240 and there are still same 23 home games it equates to 10.50 pet game .Sounds good value or am I missing something.

Or 260/23 = 11.30, so more than this years general seated admission, for commiting upfront for everygame, knowing there's every likelyhood you'll miss a couple. Though savings will increase depending on the number of cat B games.

Lets just work on the assumption that there'll be 3 cat B games. If you want a seat, it works out at

13*20 = 260
+ 16*3 = 48

For a total of 308/23= 13.40 per game to attend everygame payong at the gate.

Though if we get into a playoff chase, you can see the tailend of the season being all Cat B.

Be interesting to know if the increased food & drink proces this year have resulted in higher or lower profits. Anecdotally, the queues have been shorter.

A move from the Southern League would also mean missing out on a lucrative home game against Hereford

But might work in our favour, given how they've steamrolled through the league below. If we're set to be in a promotion or bust season, the fewer big fish in the pond, the better.

Pity that tonight's meeting wasn't an open discussion with all fans allowed.....not even all the fans from these groups have been invited!
But then we were told that the chairman is going into hospital for a few days so I suppose that's fair enough reason not to open it up to everyone.

I was under the impression that all the season ticket holders and FOTL members were invited, and the member of the other supporters thing? :dontknow:

Only indirectly, through being made aware of it through the forum. As a season ticket holder, I never received any notification from the club about it, at least not through direct contact like some seemed to get.

I work in Holbeach so I didn't make it anyway, regardless of invitation.

By now Ian will no exactly what he needs and imo neither Toby or Dillion will make the team next season

After Edge's last few games, its clear that for whatever reason he isn't thr player he was when he burst onto the scene. His confidence is shot. He needs a long run at a lower level, maybe a loan til Christmas at a Step 4 club. Get him games at a level above the reserves, but below the first team. He's too much potential to just cast adrift.

Hilliard, does a lot of work, and he reminds me of Heskey. Doesn't get a lot of goals, much maligned by a lot of people for said lack of goals, but keeps getting picked by managers who value the work-rate. Hilliard and A.N. Other would be who I expect to play up top at the start of next year, with A. New as an attacking midfielder.

Loopy you seem to be dead against giving youth a chance, just like your best friend was who only wanted to pay his pals.
What exactly have you got against the younger players at our football club?
I haven't before singing the praises let's see how many if any are playing next season.what happens if culverhouse play them but fail to get lynn promoted remember Cleeve has brought him in to get us promoted not to please the forum parents

So if he doesn't achieve promotion in his first season under Mr Cleeve will Mr Culverhouse suffer the same fate as Setch? :dontknow:

The impression given from the Chairman's notes that it play-offs minimum next year, or we might start to see our dug-out having as many visitors as a bus stop.

Does that make the list on contracts now?
Street, Hilliard, Edge, Tom Ward, Warburton, Castellan, Gaughran, Mettam
Matty's contract expires end of this season. Apparently the club has a further one year option.

Hope they exercise it. Would be a shame for Culverhouse to let someone go he's never seen play.
