General Discussion / Re: Today's Match is off
« on: December 02, 2023, 12:19:13 PM »
Decent players should be able to play on any surface. I use to play on an artificial surface at the Queens School Academy for Young Gentlefolk in Wisbech ( mind you I was never a decent player).
Seriously, great idea. Redirect the expense of training in Ely to training on an artificial pitch in Lynn.
Go part time and have players who work for a living and play/train on a Tuesday/Saturday. Those who
are part time seem to do quite well. E.g.  Southport who travelled  5 hours on a coach and scored
four goals against a full time team!. No expensive overnight hotel
Stay!
Pleased match is postponed today. Didn't fancy frozen footballs!

Coastal: I'm in complete agreement. At our level part time makes so much more good sense, not least financially but also because it is more likely to attract those who actually play for the love of the game?

As an aside, i was though not aware that there are any Gentlefolk in Wisbech?!

A great player, coach, manager, club owner, hotelier and good all round bloke, with a wry sense of humour. El Tel also found time to co author best selling crime fiction and he also had a decent singing voice!  A multi talented character who made a huge contribution to football. RIP Terry.

The manager apparently warned the players that Tamworth were dangerous from set plays, yet we allow them to score three goals from them. So what the hell do these full timers do on the training pitch? In fact what exactly are the benefits of being full time at our level???

With regard to the chairman seeking outside investment. What exactly are the assets that might attract a legitimate investor? Still, with Christmas imminent there might be someone out there looking to purchase a cowboy outfit as a present?

I guess this award has a lot to do with the young lady, Jodie Hopkins.  Been very impressed with the way she has embraced the work in the Community.   All credit to her.

I may be wrong about this, but didn't she leave the Club a few weeks ago?

I also heard that she had left the club? Irrespective of that she has been one of the very few positives within an amateurish and at times pathetic off field operation.

It sounded positive that SC has a masterplan which will hopefully see the Club working to a break even model next year.  Not sure if this something new he has come up with or the idea of summer concerts will be going ahead.  If it is something new has he lost interest in the concert idea ?

Baldrick had a cunning plan and that led to disaster but then again he didn't have a table?

Does anyone know how many other teams in our league are full time?

Does anyone know what the definition of being full time at Lynn really is?

What hours are put in each week in Ely?

A a general rule, surely full time means that football is your primary source of income and that your 'working week' reflects that?

It was a great result. Congratulations to the management team and players. My continuing 'argument and concerns' are not with them!

The visiting media team don't seem to be impressed with the facilities they have been given.

Or the state of the pitch.

I agree Tony the media side is all back to hit and miss.  It’s like most things at the Club.  Commercial side, Media.   In fairness SC running a one man show he maybe has more important issues to deal with , cultivating the investment opportunities that he has on the table.

Any news on his attempts and the foriegn investors?  :dontknow:

Does 'the table ' actually exist, or is it a figment of someone's rather vivid imagination?

If it's the same Mike Alcock, i remember him as a young man, when he worked for his father who i think started with a coal delivery business in Gayton? At the time (late 1960's) we ran the Rampant Horse pub in Gayton and Mike was an occasional customer.

Of course you are correct Mall.........it is after all a completely different game to that of his day. Beachball replacing hardball, slippers replacing boots, huge increases in fitness levels, greatly improved pitch surfaces, no apparent offside rule, 3 points for a win etc etc.......I suspect if Cloughie were around now he would have an evolved method that would now be effective....very much doubt it would be the same as existed back then.

However, he certainly knew how to get the best out of a side....and that's now key for Lynn , given the recruits that AL has inherited. Unless new money becomes available, he probably will need to be cautious in his line ups, in the sense that many sides have a better attack in terms of regular goalscorers. Playing a really attacking side only really works if you have regular goalscorers...and Lynn don't.........looks like for the short term they will need totry and eek out 1-0 and 2-1 victories where they can......not many sides will ship 3 against us I fancy( Scunthorpe managed 6 against BS I see)

Pink, i agree that Clough would have had to 'evolve', to a degree but i don't believe that his fundamental footballing philosophy would today be ineffective. His great strength was 'putting round pegs into round holes'. Maximising the return from the resource available to him and encouraging individual's to play to their strengths....doing what came naturally to them, with Peter Taylor identifying players with unfulfilled potential who fitted the mould.

Brian Clough was a great man manager and motivator. He encouraged positivity, self belief and that football was about entertainment and a game to be enjoyed by both players and spectators....All qualities that are surely not out dated and old fashioned?

At the top level today the nearest to him in respect of footballing philosophy is probably, Postecoglou at Spurs. Their bubble may well burst but supporters and players are enjoying the ride. He keeps things simple and is achieving a level of success (as he did at Celtic) well in excess of those much vaunted and revered 'coaching geniuses' who preceded him.
