General Discussion / The price of failure?
« on: March 07, 2016, 11:57:19 AM »

Or perhaps that should be rewarding failure?

I read that Steve McClaren has no intention of resigning – well there’s a surprise but can't say I blame him! Got me thinking, is there any other ‘industry’ that rewards failure so regularly and spectacularly as does foot ball at the top level??????

In my working life we used to appraise performance against agreed targets and very occasionally someone would lose their job after a prolonged period of sub standard performance – not so in the case of football management and McClaren is one of several who seemingly have become very wealthy primarily through having their contracts paid up as the price of 'failure'.

Nice work if you can get it?

Just wondered, does anyone know where he is currently playing? He seems to have disappeared off the radar at Rushden?

General Discussion / Weather
« on: March 04, 2016, 01:11:52 PM »
I see that the forecast is for steady rainfall from very early morning right through tomorrow..........I wonder, what sort of condition is the pitch in and if the forecast proves to be correct will there be an early / mid morning inspection?

General Discussion / Transfer fees
« on: February 23, 2016, 11:59:55 AM »
From the top down there would  appear to be an increasing number where the fee is 'undisclosed'.....I wonder why and surely we the supporters have a right to know?!

Tom Meecham of St Neots has just been signed by Newport for an undisclosed fee - following a similar path perhaps to Conor Washington - Peterborough next????

George Thomson's move to FCUM was also for an unknown fee and if my memory serves me correctly there was a sell on clause when he went without a fee from us to Chester????

I wonder - did a few ££££'s come our way????

General Discussion / Just a thought
« on: February 22, 2016, 07:01:46 PM »
A long time ago (!) when I used to watch the Linnets from a seat (!) in the stand opposite the main stand the pitch was a yard or two wider than it is now......Given the fact that our passing game is very much about possession, stretching teams and switching play - would there perhaps not be a potential benefit from maximising the width of the pitch?

As an aside, is there anyone out there who knows why and when it was narrowed?

Just wondered if he has finally called it a day as he has not featured in the Swaffham squad for a while?

General Discussion / The beautiful game.................
« on: February 07, 2016, 12:47:41 PM »
.........is still alive and kicking?

Leicester are now my second team and what a team they are! Can they keep it going - who knows but their way of playing, aside from being exciting is all about a team ethic and a manager who encourages them to enjoy the experience and to play without fear.........Jamie Vardy - what an advert for grass roots football but in my book they are all heroes as it is about the team being greater and more important than the sum of its parts.

For me on balance the Premiership and saturation football on TV - some of it mediocre, has been incredibly destructive in generating the anomaly of 'fans' who never watch a live game - hence the continuing decline of gates at lower and non league games, with them preferring to get their fix from watching on the box - such a shame as to many of my generation there was and is still no substitute for going to a game.

But there is hope as Peterborough and others have proved, through their discovery of non league gems. Yesterday on the Aston Villa bench was a young striker, Keinan Davis who only last season was playing for Biggleswade, having been released by Stevenage! However the ultimate example of just what is possible must be Jamie Vardy............What an example to other youngsters currently plying their trade part time in the supposed backwaters of football.........They can now afford not just to dream but to believe that perhaps it is possible to convert that dream into reality?

And who knows maybe some of those couch potato fans might yet still be incouraged to get along to their local club to be pleasantly suprised at the quality of what is on offer with the added bonus of getting some fresh air and exercise....Who knows they could even end up 'running the line'!!

I can but dream.

General Discussion / Today
« on: January 09, 2016, 06:27:49 PM »
High tempo, momentum and closing down from the outset and throughout the game - brilliant and a great team performance......Today was everything that Tuesday was not, against a decent team..For me the team deserved MOM but a special mention for Matty Castellan who made a huge difference. IMO he is a young player with a great future ahead of him and he plays with a maturity way beyond his years.

Comsidering what had gone before and the weather a very decent gate?

General Discussion / The pitch and other things
« on: January 09, 2016, 11:34:50 AM »
Sometimes after defeats - especially those that are unexpected, rather than perhaps deal with the reality of what actually happened, like most football supporters 'we' seek to blame 'outside factors', at least in part............The obvious choices being the officials, sometimes unfairly blamed for their bias when in fact they have been fair but just incompetent and more recently the state of our pitch has been raised as a factor that has undermined our performance. I think that this is also unfair as I can recall times when from the top level down conditions resembled a ploughed field? What particularly brought this to mind was the state of Exeter's pitch last evening - IMO in a worse state than ours....It would be great to play on a pristine surface all year round and yes there are some in a better condition than ours - but is it really that bad? I don't for one minute believe the pitch condition inhibited Merthyr - who played some excellent football - not just hoof ball?

So to Chesham and I wonder how many hardy souls will risk putting themselves through more avoidable angst? Not often over the years have I agonised to such a degree whther to go to a game - this time I did but supporting the linnets whatever the club formation has become integral to life.................Masochism of sorts, perhaps?

General Discussion / The next few games..................
« on: December 18, 2015, 02:30:31 PM »
........could well define our season? It was around this time last year when it all started to go dramatically wrong. If we can say pick up a minimum of six points from the next three games (one home, two away) I really believe that would give us the momentum to become serious play off contenders...However we know from bitter expererience just what can happen!!

General Discussion / Dorchester v Kings Lynn highlights
« on: December 07, 2015, 02:36:24 PM »
Have just watched the highlights and if these were a fair representation of the game as a whole we more than held our own and created a number of chances, yet once again lacked composure in the final third, whereas Dorchester were more clinical though perhaps assisted by us?...........For the first goal Sam G was beaten for pace and the cross from the dead ball line was pin point, then for the second goal was Pedro at fault or was he fouled?????

No post match interview with Setch????????

Scored a brace (now 7 for the season) in Nunaeton's 2-2 draw with FCof Manchester..........who had George Thomson making his debut. Duffy seems to have had a Lazarus like career resurgence since leaving us?

......we win tomorrow and other results fall in our favour we could move up to 6th!!

A big if and more realistically to return with a point would be good, which I believe we are well capable of......1-1?
