Morning all !  KES right to spot Melly meant Kelly !  Predictive text - only relieved it didn’t put Smelly, as would have taken some defending !  Once again we disagree, but that’s fine.  I think “big, strong, hold up players” can win games, but not many, unless they have goals in them as well.   They belonged in the W formation, on muddy pitches, in FA Cup “ battles”.  I also believe “strength” is over-rated, as it is nearly always a foul.  I realise people like Robbie Savage say “they need to commit more fouls in midfield”, but it’s rubbish, imho!  And we lost to quick nipsters all last season, often wingers, and hardly ever to big lunk “hold up” Neanderthals.  At least that’s what my eyes showed me - I disregard cliches.  We’re back to “8s, 10s, and 6s again now - 50p says you won’t hear Guardiola following that stuff !

Three or five at the back ?  What, like last season ?!  Lunks seldom cope with good nipsters !  I hope Bird is a good signing, but am a little concerned that he was frequently farmed out on loan by previous clubs.  Fingers crossed.  On defence, it is very important we have a team that spend a great deal more time in the opponents’ half than last season.  That is defending too.  Good luck to Carey at Blackpool.  I hope he gets a few games at that level.  I recall last season people were suggesting he should go on loan to a club at a lower level, to “learn the game”, whatever that means, but thankfully Dillification won the day.  He was first name on the Dilly team sheet from week one, but I fear he may have moved up a year too soon.  Would love to be proved wrong on that one.  Disappointed Melly went - he would have shone in a good side, but would always struggle in a poor one.  Signings appearing - very encouraging.  One post a week, so apols they’re long !!

Well Foden, Messi, Sterling, Iniesta, and Xavi might be well advised to give the NL a body-swerve then !  Platini and Jimmy Greaves made the right decision as well !

Yes KES - it does sound pleasing to the Dilly ears !  And, Andrew XV -  virtually all football magazines, pundits, commentators, etc, think the whole game is about “Strength” and “Crosses”.  My wife is usually reading while a game is on the box, but is always immediately amused when my prediction comes up, that after 2 hours of “punditry” about extremely complicated tactics, with computers and videos in use, and just 20 minutes into the game, the ex-pro assistant commentator will completely abandon all the algebra, and start pontificating that such and such a team need to “GET The CROSSES INTO THE BOX” !  They seldom let me down !  Mind you, if they do abandon everything and start pumping crosses into the box, they are often stymied by another tactical genius shouting “AWAY”, in perceptive panic !  Those blokes are prob on a couple of grand a game !!

You what, KES ?  B & G’s motto at the end of his posts is the definitive opposite of the Tories !

Surprise to me that he’s moving UP.  Good luck to him, but I’ve never seen a keeper less involved in his own box.  Nearly always rooted to the goal-line, and saving with his feet.  But, a I say, I wish him luck…

Yes - agree with most comments and opinions on here, especially regarding the need for continued caution re Covid.  And it must, unfortunately, be a possibility that a season not dis-similar to the last one could be looming.  My thoughts aren’t downbeat, as I fully respect and support the efforts and abilities of the main management and ownership team.  But I am a little jittery about the march of time.
It has to be said that, in the overall scheme of things, it is true that football is a fair way down the pecking order, especially in this country for the immediate and perhaps foreseeable future, but we’re all on the same side in wanting a viable, thriving club at the end of it all, if that eventually arrives.

They do in the top half, KES.  Patience is the thing, I know, but I’m getting a creeping fear of another catastrophic run of defeats.  Miserable glass half empty git that I must be, I suppose, but crossing fingers that I shall be proved hopelessly wrong….  I’m hoping SC and IC know plenty in the background that I don’t know - but the Dilly mindset is incapable of imagining such a thing ……..  !!

Fixtures ?  This is getting worrying.  We don’t appear to have a team yet !

I meant to add that I like Kes’s idea of contracted players having to stay at their clubs throughout a season, and not being allowed to move to another club until it is over.

Some on here are pointing out that money buys progress, and many clubs use it, then subsequently lose it.  My point is more about football than about the cash angle, though I realise the link.  I believe every team does a “Chesterfield”, all the time.  All teams are formed by taking on players who didn’t quite make it in a bigger and more talented team, plus nicking the best players from below.  It describes the whole system since it started at the turn of the 20th century.  Stephen Cleeve is the first one whose generosity has enabled us to make any real progress within that system.
