Unfortunately racism and xenophobia are our national problem, not specifically football’s.  And football, which is merely a recipient of the disease, can only tweak it at the edges.  But, of course, clubs will always pay a price, mainly because, in those instances when they do occur, the political class try to hide behind football’s “guilt”, rather than admit their own responsibilities that depend on a proper system of sanctions and education.

Very worrying news that SC feels as he does.  He came into the club with a level of ambition sadly previously lacking.  I agree with him that despite the vast improvement in the attendances, the level of achievement and standard of play deserve twice the crowd size being reached.  The Chairman has been superb for this club and it is difficult to imagine why any supporter would think otherwise.  The real necessity, IMHO, is much better organisation, OUTSIDE the stadium, plus increased personnel involved.  Obviously sponsorship and competition sales should be prioritised.  Radical suggestion - could there be a sympathetic person or organisation willing and able to supply a currently unused building in the town centre free of charge for, perhaps, an out of ground extension to the club shop, selling the same merchandise, and doubling as an area for sales in respect of (say) a new competition.  Maybe a cafe area, with club pictures/memorabilia on the walls.  Anything to interest and attract people who don’t follow the club at present.... but could become attracted to the club in the future, via the suggested outlet......?

With Kelly and Carey now at last beginning to be a appreciated, we may have escaped the clutches of going for “tough” players or “holding” players in midfield.  Mobility is everything, going forwards or backwards throughout the game.  We have a very exciting attacking choice available at all times.  The defending will improve, IMHO, when we pick 2 CHs only, and get a real “forest of legs” behind the ball when we haven’t got it.

I’ve been pushing for Kelly and Carey as first names on the team sheet all season.  Definite talents, and would force all opponents in this league to spend most of the game keeping us out rather than coming at us quite so often.  Good football nearly always beats tough football.  Of course, it also requires 8 or 9 men back behind the ball and covering, tackling and blocking ball movement whenever required.  Playing pretty and ugly home and away.  Tell all friends and relations that watching this team is the best we’ve seen, and now is the time to come to the games.....

General Discussion / Re: Who was/is the better striker: Defty or Marriot ?

1. Marriott.  2 Defty.  3 Gash.  BUT....  We saw Adam and Jack in their prime, but Michael, maybe not.  They also played at different levels - but they’re certainly the best 3 since Malcolm Lindsay....

Always a pity to lose players through suspension, but I don’t believe that ANY altered selection would weaken the side, because there are NO bench-warmers in this squad.

I liked Ward before, but I’m disappointed to see Barrows on the bench.  I agree with TonyM that Kelly, Carey, Barrows are every bit as good as those getting selected at present, and with Smith, Fryatt, Smith, McCauley and Ward we’re a bit top heavy now for CHs.  IC May have a job to keep them all happy considering the journeys like today’s, and the probability they could all get in most teams at this level.  Can’t agree that IC can necessarily spot a player better than those using their eyes on the sidelines, because most punters could have told Mourinho that Salah and De Bruyne were players way above his own assessment.  I’d like to think Stan is right about IC’s powers of perception, but we’ll see - he’s certainly doing us proud so far !

Need a win.  Kelly for Hendo and Carey for Clunan.  Then go for it, with the ball, and 9 back without it......

Getting concerned about the attendances.  It’s OK being impressed by the improvement from last season, but the standard of this team deserves a much bigger crowd than what has materialised.  We have the potential to match most of the attendances in the National, never mind the Northern division, but we’re not pulling them in quite as expected.  The Chairman was right to be optimistic about the improvement possible for this club when he took it on, and we surely need to repay his efforts.  A good result at Kidderminster tonight should  help the attendance at the next home game.

Yes.  Jordan R was top man today.  What a good squad we have, but maybe short of two.....  Have to express disappointment at attendance so far this season.  I appreciate the percentage increase, but this team deserves at least double yesterday’s gate,  The set-up of Manager , team, and Chairman deserve so much more, if we want to maintain and improve on this excellent era.....

Very good game again today.  We were superb in the first half - excellent football worthy of a higher level, although shooting boots not quite there.  Second half Altrincham looked classy and dangerous, befitting the top non-league side they have always been.  Then two fine finishes from Adam M.  Michael G didn’t have a good game today, but he was always involved, and a little unlucky.  Good stuff from all, but I thought Sam K was a bit unlucky to be penalised in injury time which led to their late equaliser.  I’m a big fan of Sam, though, and thought he showed real ability, as usual.  Must say SC’s notes in the programme were entertaining and humorous.

Cliff Jones scored 34 goals in a season for KL, I think I’m right in saying, but was somehow cynically thought to be here to “pick up the money !”......  Seems unlikely, because he had been in the Spurs Double winning team in 1962, and the Welsh World Cup Quarter finalists in 1958 when they lost only 1-0 to Pele’s Brazil !  The Southern Premier was indeed considered to be the top non-league, and many of the clubs have since made the Football League.  The ground was looked on as one of the best non-league in the country, but has sadly not developed like many of its contemporaries.  Big crowd needed against Altrincham who have often been the top non-league club in the country.
