General Discussion / Re: FA Cup Replay v Alfreton Tuesday Evening
« on: September 25, 2019, 09:28:35 AM »
Agree with much of TonyMís post.  All our attacking players played well and in a style that Iíve been advocating, (not a boast, just pleased to see it).  We had the fluidity I expected with those personnel, and keeping the opponents on the back foot is DEFENDING as well !  IC must have a real problem picking a side at the moment because all 16 players deserve to be in ! Donít quite agree that Kelly didnít take his chance.  His ability is obvious and he is one of our most important assets.  Anyway - what a season we are developing here - York and Leek could rock the town and hugely lift the attendances......

Lots of posts bemoaning our ďsmallĒ squad, but in terms of people up to first team level we are well off because none of the squad are fill-ins ...  they are all real assets and itís now difficult to pick a team because to do so you would have to leave out potential match-winners.  Iíve mentioned Carey and Kelly before, and they MUST play regularly so that the team benefits from their talents and also that they are happy to remain.  But I donít envy IC, because it must be very difficult to settle on a line-up at the moment.  I personally hope the game gets postponed tonight because the pitch is in for a flood, and we donít want injuries vs York....

Havenít seen real problems against ďphysicalĒ teams so far, and donít recall Alfreton being particularly physical.  Even if they play it that way in the cup, either Alfreton will play some of the game with less than 11 men, or suffering from their stodgy physical lunks being danced round by Carey and Kelly, two players who must now play regularly...... So letís be too slick for them and head for the next round with some of our players having rested before the big clash with York City.....

I take on board points made by Mallard and Kes (I think), but do think we lack much structure in fund raising, etc..  Despite being pleased to see good improvement in attendances this season I feel the actual attendance, considering the superb entertainment that is being served, is disappointing.  We have a huge catchment area (KL-Hunstanton- Fakenham - Downham- Wisbech area -Kl, and all villages in that circle) so really should be ďpulling them inĒ.  We need cover, in part, behind the goals - few clubs at our level lack it. Back to the squad - still disagree with The Duck Man re Carey.  IMHO we canít let him out on loan - he is FAR too good, and thought he looked very good on Sat vs Gloucester....Kelly as well - exactly what we need in this level of better players and less reliance on ďphysicalityĒ which usually results in fouls and injuries.....and not points in the bag...

By the way, .... rather disappointing attendances despite real improvement from last season, but the team IC, and SC deserve far bigger crowds.  SPREAD THE WORD !!

Great spirit to pull it back at the end.  We did have other chances which we didnít mess up - credit to the opponentís defensive determination.  We played well but ran into a team who smothered us very well with a forest of legs.  Disagree with Mallard about Carey in particular, as I think we saw today heís a fine natural footballer.  IC couldnít change a winning team, but Messrs Kelly and Carey are every bit as good as the rest - in fact I predict super seasons for both, plus Payne......York will be the test, but we have 15 players who can take this league to the wire, IMHO.....

Itís certainly good to see such an improvement in the attendances, but I feel we need further improvement.  My caution button tells me the opponents are bringing far more fans than in previous years, and without them, we may just be hitting a thousand.  With the superb standard the team and management have served up all season, I would hope to see bigger gates even at this stage.  If we keep it up, however, Iím optimistic our gates could balloon.

IC can use his bench because it is strong and wouldnít weaken the team.  Iíve long thought the FA Cup is seen as second rate by the big clubs, but outside the top two divisions, and throughout non-league, it is important as a money-spinner.  Way back the club reached the league clubs regularly, and this must be the best chance for years to do it again.  Itís all great progress if we get a ďplum drawĒ, and would bring income needed for continued progress...

We all see things differently, but I thought the ref had a good game.  In these wrestling situations it is very difficult for any ref to see who the villain was.  Wrestling is illegal, and someone gets the blame.  I didnít think either player was the culprit, particularly, although they both were !  But... if there was an elbow, the ref had no choice, although I didnít see one.  I think McCauley annoyed the ref 10 minutes before when he obstructed on the edge of the Penalty Area.  Letís hope the the tariff is minimal.

Super gutsy performance, and three marvellous goals.  All three were cracking shots.  Weíve got goals all over the team, and have a very strong bench which I hope donít lose patience.  Any changes wonít weaken the side whatsoever.  But 1203 ?  Good crowd, but surely we must soon start heading for double that - it would certainly be deserved...

B & G, if he isnít wanted at Boston, is he good enough for us, at our current standard ?  And considering we have Kelly, plus Payne and Carey.....

Whatever is best for Adam, then the club, in that order.  But all players need to think over ďupwardĒ moves carefully, because so many swop being popular and successful at one club, only to find themselves as bit-part players at a higher club.  Drinkwaterís move from Leicester captain to Chelsea reserves is a case in point, or, closer to home, Cameron Norman...

Probably the toughest game so far- not on the NameĒ of the club, but on current form.  Have to go for the throat, IMHO !  Attack best form of defence, then virtually everybody behind the ball when they get it.  Everyone is playing so well, but special mention for Clunan who continues to break up their moves, and often start ours.....

Agreed, Blue Moon.... the Marriott rumours are worrying.  Kelly looked good yesterday, and certainly good enough for a first choice somewhere, albeit in this very competitive squad. He would definitely be there, in my book, if we were unlucky enough to to lose our top scorer.  Letís cross a couple of fingers.  Surprised there is not more conjecture or actual news on the subject, but hopefully Iím over-blowing it......
