General Discussion / Re: Dean Saunders
« on: August 31, 2019, 09:51:05 AM »
Gash having a very good start - impressive on ground and in the air.  But I think Saunders is completely wrong to say don’t bother with football, just get it to him.  Teams that play nothing but crosses or humps forward usually finish about 17th ,with people saying how well they fought and what character they showed !  SC and the team thoroughly deserve a good crowd today - essential really, or there isn’t a connection between playing and doing fantastically well and pulling in the fans....

A thousand ?  We should be half-way to doubling that by now....  We have a healthy increase on last year, but are capable of many National League top division gates.  Steven Cleeve serves to see it, and the team deserve to hear it !......

Neither side looked unbeatable, and both had bad results at the weekend.  Kl probably favourites, but a bit early to be blasé...  Fine ground Altrincham have there.....

Another excellent result at Farsley.  Now for Darlington on Saturday.  Please have a word with all pals, relations, boyfriends, girlfriends, .etc., to come to the game..  we must be sending shockwaves to the league with this amazing start, but now is surely the time to shock many of our opponent clubs with a demo of the sort of crowd we can pull.  After all - all these games should now be as big a pull as the Slough game was.....

Didn’t stay for 2nd half as the late start messed up evening plans.  But, have to agree with WestLynn... Curzon looked very slick for much of the first half, and until the penalty looked well capable of giving us a bit of a tanking.  However, glad to read how well the team played 2nd half, and not a surprise as so good so far this season.  Very disappointed with the gate, but those sort of days can increase or decrease an attendance.  Please keep your interest despite the gates, SC - you’ve done a great job.

We need the same positivity that the team showed in the first half at Telford.  Attacking midfielders to keep the opponents back in their half most of the time.  We don’t need 3 Centre-halves, because defenders don’t provide the best defence, IMHO.  The whole team are defenders if they get behind the ball when necessary, then they can break quickly - on the ground.  They will have quick attackers too, so keep them back as much as possible. COYL.......

It would be nice to gain more of an image nationally now that we are making quite impressive progress.  If eventually we are shown on TV, even on Anglia, we would arouse more curiosity and interest if we had more terrace and some cover behind at least one goal.  Very few clubs at our new level are lacking in that area.

I was pleased to see I’d got my wish to take away one centre-half and add one attacking midfielder.  This allowed us to keep them on the back foot rather than them keep us on ours.  Then played really well, by all accounts.  I understand IC “solidifying” by reverting to three centre-halves, but ir worried me that this could hand them the initiative.  Apparently it did.  I believe attack is the best form of defence.  However - great win - well done IC and the team.  Looking forward to seeing Alfie Payne, as don’t know him at all.

OK, it’s about opinions......  Kelly on for one of the three centre-halves could do the trick, once we’ve settled, just before half-time.  Should give us more possession, and put them more on the back foot.  Later on, Hawkins for one of the midfielders....  COYL.....

We have enough “Physico Pvesence”, as the commentators say it (!), especially as it is an aspect of the game which doesn’t exist !  You never see a player get up after a potential leg-breaking tackle and congratulate his opponent on “ a great bit of physicality” !  It is almost always a foul...  We need to be slippery enough to make them do the physical stuff and give the fouls away in dangerous places.  Hopefully we will be good enough to do it.  I think we need another “slippery customer” in midfield.

Just watched the Brackley video.  They looked a slick and slippery outfit, the sort of team I expected to see at this level, showing great movement with skill and speed off the mark.  I fear there will be far more teams with their game than the “physical” approach many, for some reason, expect of a “northern” team.  Can take nothing away from our fine start, but feel sure we shall need to be clever enough to spend more time worrying opponents in their half, rather trying to stop them in ours, which will be difficult.  Points at Telford should give us real confidence.

I agree with Mallard that Steven Cleeve is doing the club proud.  This is by far the best period we’ve had for 30 years.  We’ve been left behind by many, even most of the clubs that were our competitors years ago, but we now appear to be progressing.  Must be big thanks to the Chairman - I hope we give him cause to maintain his interest and ambition.

Long balls and crosses have been the mantra for English football for too long.  We were much better when we settled and played more football.  I think this team may be good enough to that this season, and surprise several fancied teams.

Hope you’re right about the drainage system - to continue playing like we did against Kettering, we have to keep that surface.

Such a good pitch vs Kettering.  Big thanks and congratulations to the groundsman.  Bit concerned at the weather forecast for Saturday - not because it will put off supporters, but will there be any problem for the pitch with heavy rain expected tomorrow, Friday ?  Certainly hope not - the team played so well on that surface against Kettering....
