General Discussion / F A Trophy
« on: February 09, 2020, 03:52:39 PM »
Congratulations to Royston FC for their victory in the FA Trophy yesterday, taking out Ebbsfleet United, our opponents in the previous round.  Looking at  cup results in general, and taking nothing from Royston, there is an obvious trend that the higher up you go in Cup competitions, especially the FA Cup, the lower the interest in the competition.  What used to be known as “shocks”,( and indeed they were), are no longer real surprises, let alone shocks, with players routinely rested for the important league fixtures coming up.  Pity, but now a fact....

No, don’t think our attitude was to blame.  I think we played to their strengths, plus they have a good side forming now. Their strengths were crowding and therefore denying space and “field availability”, and easily mastering the long balls hoisted at them when we got a bit desperate.  Plus, of course, they were very good on the break.

Always respect IC’s judgement, but the game is as you see it, and I thought the changes missed a point today.  Kidderminster defended so well - sometimes all 10 forming a forest of legs.  So there were no gaps all day.  This meant Power, Hendo, etc, had no field to run into.  Then Hawkins came on, who was always going to run into the same problem.  So we went long, and they were the masters there as well. and they rendered MG as ineffectual.  What, IMO, it needed, while they were defending in depth, was a short but clever ball through a tiny gap....and the man to supply it would have been Sam Kelly.  Still, need a resounding bounce back at Gloucester - and, of course, we have the team to do it.

Injury update, anyone ?

Good news from Blyth, then.  Big lunks from the 50s and 90s game usually find whippets darting past them at a rate of knots !  Need to watch the set-pieces, but we have good Centre-backs.  Then let our quick and slippery forward players take over.  BUT - as always - away games are decidedly dodgy......  COYL.......

There have been posts that appear to believe AM is already on contract.  Decent Simms have been suggested for fees should he leave.  Obviously we all hope it doesn’t come to that, but isn’t he on contract already, then ?

Just watched him on YouTube, a very mobile forward with a lot of goals under his belt.  Not a “target man” type.  Looks a very useful acquisition indeed !.....  Steven is doing this club proud, no doubt about that.....

Steven Cleeve entertains me in his column, Mallard, but Piers Morgan certainly wouldn’t !.......

Jones for Barrows is ready-made, and can’t see a problem with Henderson and Power in the line-up.  We do have a lot of midfielders deserving of selection so I look forward to seeing IC’s choice.... Southwell must be the business or IC wouldn’t have picked him up, but did he cause us problems in the Boston games ? (I didn’t see them)......

I thought their no. 7 was a class act, but also their inter-team petulance showed the tension York were under, throughout.  Again, big thanks to the main men, SC, IC, and SJ, and our physio, whose workload is increasing.  IC obviously correct that there are too many difficult games to go to get complacent, starting with Blyth Spartans......

Excellent performance from both teams.  Great deal of effort put in by everybody, perhaps Gash in particular.  IC’s selection job just got harder and all over the pitch.  Superb game from Power who frightened the life out of York throughout.  Concerned about the injuries to Richards and Barrows - any loss of them would be a real blow.  I was glad to hear IC say that he didn’t expect too much defending from Power, although it does help to see “ten men behind the ball when.necessary, but what an outlet Power will be when we do spring forward.......I think SP just played his way into my “KL all-time eleven” in just 90 minutes !!!

Just making sure you’re paying attention, WLM .....  lesson there on checking the road before you cross !  Yep, point taken - Only one Fox, and Marriott playing.  I’d better inform IC double quick !.......

Good morning.  I have selected the team for today, and will inform IC shortly.....  It is. Street; Barrows, McCauley, Smith, Fox;  Kelly, Richards, Henderson, Power;  Marriott, Fox.  Subs, (and certainly not least) Carey, Jones, Bastock, Payne, Limb.  Injuries permitting, of course....  This team to win 3 -1.......

I like Loughborough Linnet’s line-up.  My only consideration might be Carey for Jones, but either way not a concern.  I agree that Jarvis, IMO, slows things down a little, but could come on if we’re hanging on later in the game.  Whatever, fitness allowing, we have a very strong line-up, and Power available if we’re not in control (on the score-sheet !)
