General Discussion / Re: Torquay away
« on: October 26, 2021, 11:16:38 AM »
There have always been two types of Lynn supporters.  One lot would be happy to attend if the team is better than Wisbech, or the biggest club and gates in the UCL !  The others prefer to be at the highest level possible.  The first lot would go to games to see a win against Holbeach, but not pay or go to see a defeat against Torquay, or the like.  Also, the ground development has been pitiful over the years, and must reduce the attraction of playing at The Walks for would-be players.   On gates, we seem to have forgotten that there is a killer virus out there, which must keep the crowd down.  Covid, and breaking up the promotion team too early haven’t helped.  BUT, if we found a goalscorer, and picked what nipsters we have, when at home, we could see real improvement.  If we climbed, with new blood, and Covid subsided at a much faster rate, I ‘m sure that we could hit York-level gates again…….  IMHO !!!  For tonight, pick Gyasi and Sundire, and rest Omatayo…. COYL……

To one and all - of course a team has to have a variety of types - it isn’t true that a Dilly team would have 10 nipsters.  I simply noticed that, last season in particular, our team selection often had none, but loads of centre-halves.  Teams like that spend a lot of the time picking the ball out of the back of the net !  For a few years now, nearly all the successful teams play without a central striker.  I remember a stunned English commentator interviewing Del Bosque of Spain, saying incredulously that he hadn’t picked a goal scorer (centreforward).  Del Bosque looked at him mystified, and said.  What do you mean, I’ve got six goal scorers in this team !  He had, too !  I’m surprised, finally, that some people think Salah and Mane wouldn’t score goals without the help of Milner and Van Dijk !  BUT, we all agree on COYL !!!

TonyM - Hi from Dillington Towers !  I don’t think our opponents have “hordes” of nipsters.  However, they all have one or two, and that’s usually enough !  We’ve lost one with nipster tendencies, namely Rowley, which is a pity.  I’m not really in a position to dillify any opinions or selections yet, because, where I live, there’s a nasty virus about which has serial killer qualities, soI’ve not been to a game this season.  I know there are snatches on video, but I can’t really judge that way.  I’m very disappointed that King has such a long-term fitness problem, because he was a nipster/ playmaker combined.  Dilly tactics are always influenced by the belief that “players” almost always beat “triers/work rate merchants, or lunks”, eg, the pundits are always on about “strength” “physicality”, while seeing the likes of Salah and Mane rip teams apart, without the cliche-ridden experts ever cottoning on !!!  Stay safe…, and fingers crossed for points on Saturday…

General Discussion / Re: Name and shame

I know nothing about this particular incident.  In general, however, it sounds to me like SC was right to criticise the action, but wrong to name and shame the lad.  Still “in general”, and still not knowing behind the scenes manoeuvrings, in general I believe SC has done the club proud over a very difficult time, I can’t be crawling, because I doubt he knows who Dilly is !  Now we have a chance to make some much needed funds, I think ŵe should stop carping, and be on the same side.  It’s getting harder to keep a competitive team together, especially considering injuries, and dire need of goalscorer(s).  Good luck in the Cup, and obviously we must try to stay in this league…

I obviously hope for the best, but frankly fear for the worst.  That lack of a goal scorer is the worry,  and something it sounds like PS don’t lack.  With four recent promotions, I would guess that the answer to the question of “how do they do it” might be they have continually ensured they have the quicker and cleverer attackers than any of their opponents ents thus far.  I do hope KES is right that they may not cope with Gold Omatayo, but I suspect they will, as he hasn’t worried any other teams so far !  Fingers crossed he or someone can find the back of the net.

I’m told that Barnet had 2 or3 nipsters that caused us problems.  They all have those players, IMHO…

I don’t know the financial situation at the club.  I do know that the Covid/furlough/season of defeats were the cause of the problems, plus the gate price for some, with, thankfully, the input in effort and fiancé from SC keeping this level going.  The crowd was bound to dip, but I firmly believe that “York”- level gates will return if we start winning and going up this excellent league.  We still have the potential to be one of the best supported teams in the league.  I’m always disappointed to hear the preference of being big fish in small pool from some people,

We’ve picked up 4 handy points in the last 2 games.  Realistically, we have failed to score enough to win at home against a team that is doing badly.  I don’t think that will change any time soon, until we find the elusive gialscorer(s).  Omatayo must score some time, but how many games will go by before or after that happens !  We are now much more competitive, so much so that Gyasi would have more opportunities to score, and I feel sure he would bag more than Omatayo.  Haven’t seen him, but I suspect he’s a throw-back to the former game that used to be the norm.

Great result.  Hopefully it will seep into the approaching performance against Barnet.  I wish IC would show a bit more confidence in Gyasi, because he’s a mixture of nippiness with the ball, and aggression without it.  Obviously Marriotthas to be subdued, but, defenders must remember he loves to sidestep a man to give him the yard he needs to pass it home. Wish we had last season’s scorers/players Gash, Southwell and Marriott !  BUT - here’s the chance to climb away from the relegation zone…

Good luck to the team today.  I believe they will compete, but it’s difficult to imagine them scoring.  Football is a funny game though, so they could suddenly get 4or 5 !  That is definitely not a prediction !  Most of us know we must get a goalscorer urgently, apart fro those who think it’s an advantage to have huge forwards, and spend all day thumping over crosses, in the hope !……..

General Discussion / Re: Altrincham and Maidenhead

I have a cheek commenting, at the moment, because I haven’t seen a ball kicked at The Walls all season, as I’m a Covid-Coward !  I’m about to catch some videos of games, I hope, so I’m still premature, if you’ll pardon the expression !  However, last night vs Altrincham, the  texts on this site again gave the impression, as against Dagenham, that we could have sewn the game up by half-time, if we had a goal scorer.  My cynicism is possibly known on here, but I hold out no hope for the Big man/Small man tactic, currently awaited, as I think “ holding it up” football isn’t usually successful nowadays.  I still think AM would have done it for us now that the team are creating chances, but, Taylor now a better bet, through availability but we do need a permanent solution.  Recruitment is more important than tactics.

Fully agree, KES.  Bleak prospects, I’m afraid.  Goal scorer needed is the one point that unites us all.  I feel a bit sorry for IC and SC, because there is a lot of luck in football, and they don’t have total control of it.  On the plus side, the chances are coming, and we are better, certainly than last season, and it’s is possible that a regular scorer could show we are still, just, on an upward path.  I’m not ramming my solution down any throats, but I would certainly like to see Marriott, or perhaps Joe Taylor receiving the ball in or near the opponent’s penalty box….

Jimmy was the closest English football ever had to Lionel Messi.  He was also the epitome of a nipster, and the sort of player who was in every team, (still is, abroad), before we got hung up on trends like “Big and Strong”, “winning fouls”, “That holding role” etc…..  I believe we’re just coming out of it now, with the likes of Salah, Mane, Son, etc…. COYL - pick the nipsters !!

Where was Gyasi ?  And the beauty of Marriott, or players like him, if we could find one, is that he/they don’t get involved in wrestling, or the push and shove rubbish that we’ve been told is part of today’s game up front, but only need a yard of space from the marker to enable them to slot it home !  They get the yard they need by a no-contact side-step to leave the marker nowhere.  That’s what we lack, IMHO.  If not Marriott, there must be someone, somewhere.  Maybe the lad Taylor, although I don’t know his style, but he certainly scores goals, albeit at a lower level.  I believe that a chance-taker can score goals at any level, as long as the team are good enough to make the openings.
