General Discussion / Re: Brackley
« on: August 16, 2019, 03:10:43 PM »
Just watched the Brackley video.  They looked a slick and slippery outfit, the sort of team I expected to see at this level, showing great movement with skill and speed off the mark.  I fear there will be far more teams with their game than the “physical” approach many, for some reason, expect of a “northern” team.  Can take nothing away from our fine start, but feel sure we shall need to be clever enough to spend more time worrying opponents in their half, rather trying to stop them in ours, which will be difficult.  Points at Telford should give us real confidence.

I agree with Mallard that Steven Cleeve is doing the club proud.  This is by far the best period we’ve had for 30 years.  We’ve been left behind by many, even most of the clubs that were our competitors years ago, but we now appear to be progressing.  Must be big thanks to the Chairman - I hope we give him cause to maintain his interest and ambition.

Long balls and crosses have been the mantra for English football for too long.  We were much better when we settled and played more football.  I think this team may be good enough to that this season, and surprise several fancied teams.

Hope you’re right about the drainage system - to continue playing like we did against Kettering, we have to keep that surface.

Such a good pitch vs Kettering.  Big thanks and congratulations to the groundsman.  Bit concerned at the weather forecast for Saturday - not because it will put off supporters, but will there be any problem for the pitch with heavy rain expected tomorrow, Friday ?  Certainly hope not - the team played so well on that surface against Kettering....

Impressive performance once we settled down - when both sides stopped the head tennis.  Deserved the win, and it feels like the start of a very decent season.  We look hard to beat and difficult to stop.  Good crowd too, which may snowball somewhat on Saturday vs Hereford.

Already, they looked to have the slippery individuals, and we looked stodgy and lacking the guile to unlock heavily manned defence.  But, it was an away game and hopefully we will improve.  The question vs Kettering is do we have players to wrong foot defenders to create easier chances than normally arrive from high balls into the box.  Fingers crossed - we shall see.  He should play our quickest and slickest players, not our toughest tacklers.  Good luck, and I hope the crowd isn’t down too much following Saturday....

Disappointing result at Guiseley, but, as said elsewhere on the forum, an away game, no more no less.  Unfortunately it may already to a certain extent have reduced the attendance on Tuesday.  Hope not.  I have a feeling that most clubs will have slippery midfielders and attacking players that are difficult to stop for 90 minutes,  and I hope we see on Tuesday that we can also be elusive enough to create problems in what are often 8 men defences employed by all away teams in the modern era.  COYL - fortress Walks, hopefully !

A little worrying that crosses and free kicks were the way the ball made into their box.  Like to think we will be slick enough to create better openings once the league games start.  That’s just a generalised view of the way games are most often won, but is no criticism of our team because I haven’t seen them play yet.   Good luck to all for a good season....

Looking at the whole list, I can only hope we are good enough to keep them under pressure at their end., and being decidedly sharp attacking our chances.  Don’t want to spend too long at scrapping to keep them out !

I’m intrigued that Walks in the Sunshine doesn’t like the look of a shirt on him, but he’s ok with the shorts !  I would have more concern the other way round !!...... (not being personal, Walks, just seeing the funny side !).

Thanks Mark, and agree with Mallard that the loss of old grounds is sad to see.  Boston United built their stadium to league level and surely it will be a loss....

Impressed by the Trust’s efforts on the GDF/Turnstiles front, but always fascinated by the lack of progress we have made over the decades.  How, for example, have Stamford funded the very decent covered terrace they have behind one of their goals ?.....  equally how is their ground choc-a-bloc with advertising signs all around the ground ?....both as demonstrated on the KLTV video of the first friendly game.   Maybe the two are linked ?  Hopefully our attendances will give us a real boost to finances in this new division that we have deservedly reached.  BRING A FRIEND, OR TWO/ THREE !....  Our most difficult but best chance of real progress for donkey’s years awaits !!

Doesn’t matter really about formations....  - when we have the ball, flood forward....  when they have it, get back (811  ! )....
