General Discussion / Re: Heartbreak for Linnets.
« on: May 08, 2023, 12:30:05 PM »
Some may think this a harsh judgment but in my opinion we are currently ill equipped for the National League both on and off the pitch.
This is a very true statement. Several games over the last season we have only just edged a result, we need more convincing results as Kidderminster did to us yesterday.

………which will only come from a bigger budget

Not really surprised at today’s outcome. Huge credit to the Lynn squad on what they have achieved……great cup run and second in the league. No disgrace in being found wanting a bit after 55 games or so………..especially when you consider the travel and time implications of playing in a northern based league.

More importantly for me, this highlights how the current model isn’t going anywhere……even though I have enjoyed the last few seasons.

Lynn clearly had the strongest squad at the start of the season and up to around November, but since then the likes of Fylde, Chester and Kidderminster have invested heavily and changed their squad and fortunes dramatically. Lynn were unable to do that, even though they brought in 2/3 and the end result is that they end up no better off than the likes of Weymouth and Dover, who survived relegation by the skin of their teeth.

I guess this should be crossroads time……..probably need to completely reset and start building up the commercial side or find more investors pronto……or slip down a few leagues and find a balance for the current set up.

Noticeable that last few games Lynn crowd has exceeded 2000………club needs to find a way of getting this engagement regularly.

Huge ask for the Linnets to win two more on the bounce…….going to have to be at their very best in both games.

If two teams are to be promoted, then it should be the two teams with the most points over the season, the teams that rightly earned their promotion. There’s no play off to decide relegation. That could work too, bottom team relegated automatically, then have three games involving the 6 that finished above bottom and the losers all get relegated. Not going to happen, because the bottom 4 deserve to be relegated, like the top 2 deserve to be promoted.

Whereas I understand where you are coming from, the play offs have the potential of giving the Club an extra (circa) 10k paying customers through the gates over the three games. Big money spinner for those involved and could even be a bit of a financial life line to some clubs.

Also, it does keep the season alive and gives clubs something to play for. This season has been the very best example of that, with both the title and the play off places still up for grabs on the final day.

Yes, its a bit of a lottery (the same could be said for penalty shoot outs), but its probably the best of the options available.
Yes, I understand the reasoning, however it shouldn’t have replaced automatic promotion places, instead it should have been an addition. Have the two, or three automatic promotion places and then have play offs for one additional place. Whether that be from say 4 teams who were just outside a promotion place, or say 6 teams, with the other 2 teams coming from the league below who just finished above the automatic relegation places. That way, one extra team could get promoted, with another team getting relegated. Either way, the top finishing teams rightly get promoted, but the incentive is still there for others.
Ok, subject closed, good luck to the Linners for Sunday. My friend says we will win 2-0, with Coulson and Clunan scoring. I will take that.

Quite agree John. Football is in danger of becoming a bit of a circus, pandering to end of season dramas of 3 games to the detriment of the importance of a 46 game season. (won’t even mention the farce that is VAR and the overlight ball that ricochets uncontrollably in the penalty box a dozen times every match)

these things need reviewing, not necessarily changing…I am not advocating going back to the”good old days”, but a sensible balance has to be found. In the case of play-offs, I would suggest that a team is given a goal advantage for every 10 points clear they are at the end of the season on the opposition. So for example being 24 points clear of Brackley and Kidderminster, Lynn would start the play off  2-0 to the good. Chester, would start 1-0 up against Brackley….if Lynn and Chester were to meet, it would start 0-0, as 9 points separated them.

Both Fylde and Lynn dropped plenty of points to lower sides. The only real difference was in the 2 head to heads, 3-3 at their place and 0-1 at The Walks. Unfortunate that the latter happened when things were “not all well”, shall we say, at the club. How much TW’s alleged background touting of himself affected his performance and that of the squad at that time, can only be guessed at. Huge credit to the squad and to the current management duo on getting things back on track. Let’s hope they get the run of the dice in the lottery, which is the playoffs….they certainly deserve it

Second….Spennymoor forward has 21… but thank goodness for Gold. Aaron Cosgrave started like a house on fire, but hasn’t been first choice often of late. When you see that the next highest scorer has only 8, it just highlights Gold’s value….and he does a helluva lot of defending too.

Yes to be consistently on the front foot we need to win the midfield and have the lion’s share of the possession…….unless we wanted to just lump it.

Player of season…..for me Crowther or Omotayo………there is nowhere to hide as a defender……..but then again 20 plus goals, the winner at Doncaster and a huge amount of defensive headers won………maybe the last 3 games will enable me to decide

Whilst I understand your points Tony, I have to agree with Coastal……enjoy the here and now……..if it does all go awry further down the line, then with the current model we are powerless anyway…..so why not just enjoy it while we can

Yes, really important that Lynn have as much possession as possible to prevent a regular aerial bombardment….a hard working, really fit, midfield set-up would seem to be required and hopefully the early initiative can be gained.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Hughes in for Barrett and  possibly Cosgrave with his extra pace on the break, in for Stephens……..Goldie  as always, will be important in both boxes.

Who are these new people, and where did they come from?

“They are locksmiths……and they are locksmiths “. (Naked Gun, 1980’s or 90’s ha ha)

Don’t worry Dilly, they are good people who need our support….time to ramp up the positivity however many nipsters  they do or do not select.

Does he fit the criteria of having a son who needs a guaranteed start ?  Even when he’s injured and the TV are there.
Bit harsh……..Theo provides some necessary bite in the middle of the park and I had the feeling that just before his injury he was winning the doubters over.

I wonder where people would place TW in their ratings. I would have his team (ie the 3 of them) at the top of management teams that have been at The Walks in the last 20-30 years…..probably the only one capable of keeping a team in the National League
