Yes, really important that Lynn have as much possession as possible to prevent a regular aerial bombardment….a hard working, really fit, midfield set-up would seem to be required and hopefully the early initiative can be gained.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see Hughes in for Barrett and possibly Cosgrave with his extra pace on the break, in for Stephens……..Goldie as always, will be important in both boxes. 333

Even when he’s injured and the TV are there.Bit harsh……..Theo provides some necessary bite in the middle of the park and I had the feeling that just before his injury he was winning the doubters over. I wonder where people would place TW in their ratings. I would have his team (ie the 3 of them) at the top of management teams that have been at The Walks in the last 20-30 years…..probably the only one capable of keeping a team in the National League 335
General Discussion / Re: Widdrington Resigns« on: April 02, 2023, 11:21:44 AM »I always felt a Tommy had a high opinion of Tommy. Yes, I would say that’s vital. One of the difficulties I feel, is that when the managerial vacancy is being offered, I am pretty sure that the club is touted as a sleeping giant…which of course it is not. Further down the line SC gets to a point where he can’t match the big bucks of a Fylde set up and the crowds at The Walks are not those hoped for. At that point there are constraints on the squad. I feel that def. happened here. Lynn had the best squad , by far up till November. I recall TW saying how important it was to keep recruiting to stay ahead of the pack. In the next couple of months Fylde signed, I believe 7/8 top players for this league….Lynn managed 2 good additions in Hughes and Cosgrave. Just looking at Ollie Baylis yesterday and summaries of fees paid to agents and the like…….Lynn paid £2K……….Fylde paid over £22K, I believe…..kinda shows the difference. I suspect one of TW’s big frustrations was lack of budget to beef up the squad when it mattered. He remembered crowds of 2K when he brought Salisbury to The Walks and hoped similar levels would boost the coffers……he believed Lynn to be better supported than it currently is….hence his stroll around the town looking for evidence…but alas………..(similarities here with OC during his tenure, in terms of lack of budget at crunch time) 336

Similar line up to Hereford match I suspect—need to look to dominate possession and win the midfield.

Personally I was pleased to see TW’s line-up for Hereford…think he got it just right. Playing 3 centre backs, looking to win the midfield and dominate possession and then having the most prolific goal scorers up top (Cosgrave or Omotayo/Ponticelli) makes good sense.
If we cast our minds back to the good start it was based largely on solid defence, strong, hard working midfield and Omotayo and Ponticelli up front. I know that TW went on record as saying he wanted to be more positive in the second half of the season and use Barrett and Stephens more……but that was before the injury to Hargreaves. Without Hargreaves, it’s difficult to accommodate both Stephens and Barrett in the line up as they don’t have the same engine as Cam. For the rest of the season I would be playing the Hereford line up when away from home and Omotayo and Ponticelli at home with Cosgrave as sub for second half. For me Barrett and Stephens would be options from the bench in the last 20 minutes. Both are skilful , flair players, but the stats show that the bulk of the goals will come from elsewhere….and basically, lose the midfield early doors in a match and you are up against it right from the start. I tend to agree with John H and feel that if you playBarrett, Stephens, Ponts, Gold/Cosgrave all in the same line up, then over the course of 90 minutes, that is less effective than playing just 2 of the more prolific goal scorers upfront, backed up by hard working midfielders. |
