General Discussion / Re: So far this season.

Another tough place to go…….but having pulled back to 1-1, losing a player to a red card with 30 minutes left makes things really difficult. Josh Coulson is the star forward at the moment it seems, scoring today and his effort cleared off the line and falling to Stephens v Gloucester. 3 points v Alfreton on Monday seems pretty important now.

No umbrage taken Dilly…why would one…it’s a football forum after all and I am well aware you didn’t mention Academies directly.

(However, one final attempt just to help B &G , Dilly posted… “Not sure “developing “players works”.

Many people (not just my mind) think that the main role of Academies is in developing players….it’s what they do.

Therefore, if one were to conclude that developing players didn’t work, then Academies would be of little value .

It’s a logical argument for most brains. The fact that Dilly didn’t mention Academies is  irrelevant to that logic)

I don’t believe Dilly said anything about closing Academies down.

Surely even academy players have still got to be able to “do it”.

Interesting post B & G…….Dilly questioned the benefit of developing players. I would argue that developing players is the main function of academies. So, if you argue that there is little benefit in developing players, it follows, to my mind that you would close your Academy as it wouldn’t be of benefit.

Over to you two

Not sure “developing” players really works.  Jimmy Greaves would listen to BillNicholson’s dressing room diatribe then say “Boss, you can either do it or you can’t”!

This will be a test of this Forum’s popularity………..if Academies up and done the country and throughout the globe are closed down with immediate effect we will know that it’s far reaching and they have all seen Dilly’s post and acted on it. :laughcry:

My “first” club has always encouraged players to play in a certain way and developed them through their academy….yes there are certain attributes an individual has that can’t be taught, but you sure can take the raw talent, nurture and build on it. This club was smaller than many of the adjacent rivals and didn’t have the big bucks to splash out on players, so it produced its own. It used to be called (and maybe still is) the West Ham Way.

The lad has had a few games and a full time pre-season on top of the pre-season game.  IMHO Pink he is way short of what’s needed.  He looked unfit, poor first touch, not the most mobile.  Ponticelli was clearly totally p’eed off with in those opening 45 mins.  Is it a coincidence that with in 72 hours of Saturdays game we have a 6’ 6 striker onboard ?

Last season we had Gold but he was the only target man striker we had in the squad.  Maybe I am being harsh on the lad but ask anyone who was there Saturday what they thought.

Yes Mall, I take all of your points.

I maybe wrong, but I think there has been a shift in the model, in the sense that the budget set, is looking to bring in and develop young talent. This will require a degree of patience…and there will be hits and misses along the way.

The latest recruit is only 20 and according to the Solihull manager who he was last with, is a prospect, but still has plenty of developing to do. Bartley is 19……with plenty of developing to do also, from what you say.

We seem unlikely to bring in an experienced, proven goal scorer at this stage.

What I was suggesting in my earlier post, is that we keep both the aforementioned forwards for a while and see how they both develop…neither is the finished article.

Interesting signing.  Let’s wish the guy well.  He can’t be any worse than the guy who led the line Saturday.  Have we cancelled his loan deal ?

Why would we cancel his loan deal at this point ? Like everyone else, he needs a few games to bed in and be fairly assessed and if as seems likely we are going to change back to a big un and a little one up front, we need two big uns in the squad, to cover for when one is injured or suspended.

I am a kinda pleased I missed the Gloucester game….everybody without exception seems to have the same view.

However, this may be a time when patience is a virtue….both with management and squad….they are both young and will learn and grow as the season progresses.

Lynn are not a big non league club and certainly now, do not have big money to throw around, it seems.

The money is probably not there to support any significant replacement of personnel in the coming months and in any case it’s way too early to assess how things may pan out.

I plan to be patient, stay positive and keep my fingers crossed……..in the current circumstances, it may be the best we can do.

No, not scoring for fun, but if it’s the best you have it’s the best chance you have!  Equal with their No. 11, Josh was the best player on the pitch.  But we do need a regular scorer, and more creative ability in every position, particularly midfield.  I don’t think Gold O will set the NL alight, so keep tabs on him.  He did score goals in the end…

I understand where you are coming from Dilly….but you don’t know if that combination is best until you give the others a go. Fatjado given some game time, scores, now in your side. Royle needs to be given a chance too….no point in having the likes of Royle, Bartleyetc in the squad unless you are going to give them a chance.

The selection made the performance easily predictable.  None of the players capable of causing problems for the opposition were picked.  The difference when Barrett and Stevens came on was visible.  So many managers think they can “stodge” their way to victory with effort and some master plan that none of the spectators can work out from the stands.  It’s a simple game.  Pick your best players and you have more chance of winning than making them watch the game from the bench,  Only having Barrett for half a game was daft, and Fatadjo needs to start. Let’s start from now!

Fatadjo was suspended so couldn’t start. Barrett had a niggle last week so played 45 minutes.

The manager has to try out the new signings such as Bartley and give them a run surely.

It’s not as if your preferred picks of Barrett, Ponticelli and Stephens are scoring for fun.

I actually agree with you Pink on some of the points you make.   4 seasons of playing at a level (S) where I think Kings Lynn as a Club are punching.   Where I struggle is I can’t get my head around the idea that the squad Hughes has put together is a rebuilt job for the future.  Players that are going to improve will be gone when offered £50 a week more.  Some are coming to the end of their shelf live at this level. Some are not step 2 standard (IMHO).

I never saw this season as a year of challenging at the business end of the table, not with the owner reducing the budget.  However looking at Saturday ( and yes it’s one game) I really think that side will be in a relegation battle.

I also agree with some of the points you make Mall. I suspect the side will morph as the season goes on. The central defensive area will need fresh legs and more pace before long…….and we desperately need to find a regular goal scorer or two…I am not sure we have any currently.

3 points from 12 is poor no matter how you look at it. The writing is on the wall even at this stage of the season. We just haven't got it at the moment.

I think Hughes hasn’t made it easy for himself, by saying he wanted a fast start, similar to last season. That clearly isn’t going to be the case. But 3 of the 4 games have been draws and the other one was lost due to goalkeeping injuries and a young keeper being thrown in at the deep end last minute….to his great credit, he has now settled in and is doing ok.

4 games in , I would argue, the wall isn’t even in sight let alone having anything scrawled on it.

Gentlemen, we have been very fortunate over the last 4 seasons. Two top NLN years and two years in the NL.

We all know that wasn’t sustainable year on year, with the current income streams.

This season is going to be different…..a major rebuild with a young squad on a significantly reduced budget.

Looks like recruitment has been reasonable, with at least 4 of the newbies meeting the required level already. Some of the others will need more time to acclimatise to the rigours of NLN football.

Four games in and competitive in each match.

For the true fan , this could be a really interesting season, seeing a new squad develop………what the players do need is patience and support from loyal fans. The glory seekers will inevitably disappear for a while , as the team grows and will return as things improve.

A dozen games in, would be a good time to assess how things are progressing IMHO

I personally don’t consider him the most talented player in the club…….I would say he has the potential to play higher……but then so have a few.

Football from a results business is about scoring and preventing opponents scoring. Lynn play some lovely attractive football, but currently aren’t great when it comes to scoring and preventing opponents scoring. So far averaging a goal a game and conceding 2 a game.

In an attacking sense Lynn have lots of players with potential who play pretty football, but Lynn don’t seem to have anyone who can convert a decent ratio of clear cut chances and has a reliable end product. Maybe the new additions who are starting to get game time can snatch a place or two on merit.

Hughes the manager, compared JB to Nick Haughton a few months ago….thing is Haughton was top scorer in the NLN last year.

So far this season, if memory serves:

                                        Starts.    Subs.         Goals

Stephens                            3.                             0
Ponticelli.                            3.                             2
Barrett.                               2.                            0

Fatjado.                                            1.               1
Bartley.                                             3.               0
Royle.                                 0.            0.              0

I don't believe your stats are correct with regards to Barrett.

Ah yes thanks B & G and apologies to JB, who of course didn’t feature v Curzon

Maybe just give each person entering the stand a wet wipe  :bath:

Be nice in such a case if they found their way into designated bins, to be picked up by a masked and gloved individual………but would there be a temptation in some quarters , to share them with the away dug out or an opposition player who earns the crowd’s displeasure and then FA action and sanctions may follow. Maybe a few mock hawks could fly from the top of the stand.(?)
