Squad for next season

Squad building time for next season.

Obviously we don't know who IC intends to keep from the current squad but with the possibility of 2000 league players looking for clubs very soon, who would supporters like to see at Lynn? Let's keep it realistic but ambitious and restrict it to players that we know are available.

Where do we start? Looking around, there already appears to be quite a few players available that fit the bill.

Looking around at players being released I’ll throw 4 in the mix starting at the back.

Steve Arnold ( no not AC10) keeper released from Northampton ( started at Norwich)

Cameron Norman and FBT both released.... no brainer. 

Luke Chambers 35 years of age.  Leader  released by Ipswich.

We have to limit the crosses coming into the box and we have to be able to deal with those that do.
For a centre half to partner Kyle, I would be looking for someone with NL or league pedigree, who is quick, 6ft 3 ins or more, domineering in the air and midto late twenties.

For the keeper, at least 6ft 2ins, of similar pedigree to above and able to really command his box and able to confidently come out for crosses in "his area. "

Both full backs need to be equally good defending and stopping supply as they are marauding forward.

For me top of list has got to be experienced goalkeeper who is going to control his area and be vocal.

Bradley Rolt should be signed. Seen some of his stuff at u18, and think there's a top goal scorer in there. Obviously still needs to learn his game, but that's the sort of player the club should be targeting. As mentioned before, I'd only keep a small handful of existing squad and get rid of rest.

McFadden, Fleming, Smith, Richards, Clunan, Carey, Gash, Gyasi.

Mixture of players who are good enough to fill in the squad, and keep the dynamics of the club that know what it's meant to get here. So new players buy into the team, which has been completely lost since turn of the year. Experienced goalkeeper, CB and CM. Fill the wide positions with pace, ideally with younger players.

All fair points so far, really difficult decisions to be made, primarily are we looking to establish ourselves as a NL side - in which case it probably requires more full timers with all that financial gamble that entails, or are we just looking to try and stay in the division ahead of Dover and two others - which 'could' probably be achieved on a part-time model around a few key players which would be lower risk if we found ourselves back in NLN and part time again.  Whichever we opt for I just hope we don't go handing out lots of two year deals as surely we have learnt our lesson by now?

As most agree, keeper is a key, as is someone to partner McFadden (NL - personally I would only keep one of Smith & Fleming), can't see that FBT won't find another EFL team but Norman may be available.  I also think Carey will find himself an EFL side next season which will leave a big hole.  NL, appreciate the comment about the squad dynamics but I think needs must although I would have Jones back (if fit) but not Gyasi.

Ipswich boss Paul Cook, is certainly having a clearout at Portman Road with both experienced pro's and several promising youngsters being shown ther door.
Any within Lynn's approach and budget? One such is 21 year old Jack Lancaster, would be a welcome addition to our striker options.

Must be concerns for the start of next season with regard to numbers being permitted to attend.

This new Variant could see the June release pushed back.   Will Clubs at NL go with reduced numbers or decide not to start the season if this is the case ?  The last thing anyone would want is a repeat of the mess that was this season.

Agreed...the one thing the Gvnmt had to do was secure the borders.  For the 3rd time running the Gvmnt is behind the curve. Given this variant is more transmissible and the current vaccines are probably less effective against it, the variant has already arrived and is circulating in Norfolk and the fact that everything is opening up from Monday, we could all be in for a bumpy ride again.

Just when we were daring to be more positive and look forward to next season...........grrrrr....damn their incompetence .

It's a balancing act.

I wouldn't like to be the person having to make tthe decision.

Personally, I feel they are setting the scene in case of some degree of further restrictions. They know there will be an increase in infections for a while. As long as NHS can cope with this, lifting restrictions will proceed. If there is a danger that it will push NHS to the limits, then they will clamp down hard on it.

The success of getting numbers down is due to lock down. If people don't mix socially, the virus has nowhere to go.

Makes you wonder how sooner the restrictions could have been lifted if more people had followed the rules instead of thinking they didn't apply to them.

True B & G and of course if things had been implemented sooner in the UK and in many of the other so called big economies there probably would not have been a world wide pandemic at all.

The World dodged a bullet a few years ago with SARS. If the developed world had continued research into that (more than they did, as apparently the work they did do was invaluable to the covid 19 research) then we would have been more prepared for Covid 19.

The reluctance by leading Nations to spend money on something that may happen in the future, came back to bite them big time.

The leading nations didn’t plan to fail, but certainly failed to plan.

Good to see good sense about Covid on here, it’s not totally common, you know !  As for next season.  The Dillification is as follows....  Get back Street, or get a “ box- dominator” GK, get back Norman, Nathan Fox, FBT, and Marriott.  Keep the ante-Covid regulars, and (sacrilege coming up), advise Sonny Carey that although we understand his temptation, he may have a frustrating season at a league club, particularly the two clubs mentioned in the Championship, and is presently more suited to play in a new and strengthened KL team.  If he keeps his form, league clubs will come back. I think he’s a year too early to make that leap.  We do badly need another King, if the one we have can’t make it back to full fitness.  Over and out - and for what it’s worth !!  Perhaps next season (nearly forgot), Gash should be more of a cover for the central defenders.
