King's Lynn v Hereford programme request
« on: July 25, 2021, 02:43:01 PM »
Hello I'm a Hereford United fan (pre Hereford FC) looking to fill some gaps in my programme collection.

The programmes I am interested in are the home Southern League Premier Division games played at The Walks Vs Hereford United during the seasons 1965/66 to 1970/71. I've produced summaries of all the games involved, which I hope you might enjoy.

·       This game was played at the Walks on 4 May 1966 – a couple of months before England would win the World Cup!
·       Hereford lost this game 4-2 in front of a crowd of 1,041.
·       Ex Linnet Peter McCall was at the hub of every attack for Hereford but Bobby Laverick did the damage for the Linnets scoring 2 goals.
·       Brooks (not sure if it was David or John) and Dudley Banson (who I believe was a local boy) scored the other two goals

·       This game was played at the Walks on 10 March 1967 in front of a crowd of 2,731. Kings Lynn won 2-0 with both goals coming from the prolific Malcolm Lindsay - who sounds some sort of player!
·       In our home programme notes of the same season, we have described Malcolm as "the leading scorer in the last two seasons. Goes all the time – troubles every defence"

·       This game was played on 1 May 1968. Once again King's Lynn were victorious winning the game 2-1 in front of a crowd of 1,269. This was Herefords sixth successive defeat at the Walks.
·       Brian Jenkins and David Clarke scored for King's Lynn
·       I understand that the pitch was greasy and heavy that day, caused by a torrential downpour of rain – no excuses from us though!
·       In our home programme notes of the same season Brian Jenkins is described as follows -"Inside left Brian Jenkins was recently signed from Nuneaton, formally Cardiff City and Bristol Rovers – knows where the goal lies"
·       We also described David Clarke as an "Outside left, signed from Notts County last summer. Has a good future in the game – very fast and tricky"

·       This game was played on 25 January 1969. Hereford once again lost the game - 3-0 in front of a crowd of 1,751 – Brian Jenkins and David Clarke were on target for King's Lynn yet again!
·       Sportingly you held a minutes silence for two of our players who had been killed in a car accident during the week
·       This time our home programme describes Brian as "very good in the air for a smallun"!!!

·       This game was played on 25 April 1970 and Hereford actually managed to draw this game 3-3 gaining our first ever point at the Walks, in front of a very small crowd of 587.
·       Brian Evans was our tormentor that day scoring a hatrick!

·       This was Hereford's first ever victory at the Walks 1-0 but only witnessed by a crowd of 640 spectators.
·       The game was played on 28 April 1971
·       Sadly not the best season for you I'm afraid

There was of course another very famous clash (in our history) in season 1971/72

On 28 November 1971 we met in the First Round of the FA Cup at the Walks and drew 0-0.

Remarkably King's Lynn had already played 4 cup games to get to this stage! This was an extremely tricky game for Hereford, played on frozen snow. 750 Hereford fans made the 350 mile round trip to watch this game, and it is said that this game was the hardest of all the games played on our way to beating Newcastle United at Edgar Street

If anyone can help me track down these programmes then you will make my day! If you can, will you please make contact with me via Phil Ellis from the Blue and Gold Supporters' Trust or PM Admin.

I hope I haven't bored you all too much!

With very best wishes and many thanks again,

John Cutler (Hereford)

I seem to remember the Welsh legend John Charles played and later managed Hereford in the mid-60s. I think he may have played in one of those matches. Can you imagine these days seeing Gareth Bale ending his career in the Southern League?  Many experts regarded Charles, the Gentle Giant, as Britain’s greatest all-round footballer of any generation, equally at home at centre forward as at centre half.
John, I’m fairly certain I had at least one of those sixties programmes in my Lynn collection. I donated the collection to our Trust sometime ago and they raised some funds from the sale of the collection. I don’t know where they went but Mr Len Candlish of the Trust may be able to assist you. Good luck in your search.
