Alfreton

Very pleased they have had that reality check. Alfreton are a week ahead in terms of prep and are always up for it and usually pretty physical. Possibly the first real full on men's test and seems like they came up a bit short....seemed to have problems with Rhead all game.

Let's remind ourselves that they are a league below and part time.......however they are not a new squad as Lynn are.........fair bit of work to do before The Shrimpers methinks. We are a couple short, as IC has admitted....... could do with those in now as it's already a little late for them to bed in.

I believe the NL and NLN requirements over the course of a season are quite different and am not surprised that all the National League sides have found Alfreton a challenge.

Let's hope we can hit the ground running and get something from both Southend and Yeovil.....we can do without playing catch-up ..... fingers firmly crossed

Being a pessimistic, realist, I fear it might be more than just a "reality check"!!.....more like a forerunner for a lot of the season ahead :(

Even though the pre season friendlies involved squads from the likes of Norwich, Peterborough and MK, I think many expected this to be our first real test. A match against a full strength side, about to start their season, so up for it and raring to go. Players taking the opportunity to show their Manager that their name is the one that needs putting on the shirt for when their season starts next week.

First they fascinate the fools, then they attempt to gag the intelligent.

Can't really comment on game which you haven't  seen but I will repeat what I said before I think you need competition for goalkeepers shirt.

No going over the top when we beat Posh and the reverse side of the Coin no sinking to the depths of despair on getting dicked at Alfreton.

However with last seasons defensive short comings having been resolved, up until today.  It must put some doubt out there after shipping 4 goals.

Matt Rhead was a handful last season for our defence was the same applicable today ?

Have to say I really am not sure about our new keeper, but time will tell.

Be interesting to hear what IC has to say about today.   Hopefully the new YouTube channel has done one with him.
What if the Hokey Cokey really is what it’s all about ?

Apparently, very much so.

Anyone of that height will be a test for our defence......he's 6ft 4 and well built............we are still a bit short in height at the back........most NL sides have a few big forwards and some like Denton of Chesterfield are much taller than that.

I was hoping our keeper would be compensating by great movement and command of the box.......not sure that is happening currently...

I see the Heacham game has been called off... apparently due to knocks and in juries, which presumably have been added to today.

I must say I was surprised by this fixture at this stage of preparations......

the 3 games we had against them when in the NLN were huge physical battles, which resulted in injuries and suspensions

If anyone expected any less , then that was a bit naive IMO

I wonder if Lynn will play a friendly game behind closed doors before the League opener ?

Seems a bit of a risk to go two weeks without a game and on the back of a 4-1 tonking.

Can’t have a stab at the reason for the set-back at Alfreton without knowing what the line-up was.  Did King play, for example, or were we top heavy with defenders, centre-halves, “holding” midfielders, etc ?  I’m always hoping to see a selection that can put the opponents under pressure, because only occasionally does pure defending succeed.  Also , I see Southwell scored - but won’t go on about what I think was a mistake.  Anyone know the team selection yesterday ?

Yes, I saw it on the feed and as I recall it was our strongest 11, pretty much.......think Morias may have joined as a sub. Seem to recall King coming off after about 60 mins. McFadden subbed about half way through second half and replaced by Fleming, possibly due to injury.

I am a little concerned that we couldn't stand up to their size and physicality.. ......I know they are probably a stern test at step 2 level in that regard.....but we are full time, with a young, fit squad and we know all about Johnson and Rhead.

Let's hope that it wasn't a true reflection......maybe because they are a week further in their prep. and because we had played Peterborough just a few days before .............but when all is said and done we are full time now.

Gyasi had a couple of chances....rounded the keeper and put it wide and shortly after hit the post.......so score could have been a bit different.......and their first and third goals were very good (overhead from Southwell and 25 yarder from Johnson)

Alfreton could be a force this year, but with due respect to them, if we can't stand up to them and impose our own game, then we will be joining them in the NLN sharpish

Dilly it looked a full compliment of those who played, who were available.  The squad we have is very lightweight and don’t have the option of ‘resting’ players.

I do wonder if the number of games we have played and players adjusting to full time training had any baring on yesterday’s poor result.   We have played games against 3 much higher pro clubs now that must take its toll where we could be chasing players a lot of the time.
Maybe this is part of the reason the Heacham has been pulled.

Just a thought.
