Jimmy had brief spells in the Southern League with Chelmsford City and Barnet in the mid-Seventies. Can anyone remember whether he crossed paths with Lynn?
His old Spurs teammate Cliff Jones from the glory-glory days lined up for the Linnets when Reg Davies was in charge at The Walks.
I count myself lucky to have seen Jimmy live in the Sixties. He scored a magnificent goal against Man Utd in  1965 which for several years started the Match of the Day opening sequence. I was watching from the Park Lane end when he waltzed through the Utd defence. A true great.

Think I remember him name checking Lynn on Saint and Greavise after another one of his ex non-league clubs, Woodford Town, knocked us out of the FA Cup to qualify for the first round proper. Woodford were a couple of leagues below Lynn I think so it was something of an upset!

By pure chance I literally bumped into Jimmy Greaves in 1996 during the interval of The 3 Tenors concert at the old Wembley Stadium. I shook his hand and told him he was a hero of mine. Had a chat for a few minutes. Lovely chap, no swank or pretence.

I think Jimmy played on the Walks, in about 1956? My father took me to see Lynn play Chelsea A, He was in the Chelsea Team. I may have the dates wrong. But one thing for sure, he WAS a great player. RIP.

Jimmy was the closest English football ever had to Lionel Messi.  He was also the epitome of a nipster, and the sort of player who was in every team, (still is, abroad), before we got hung up on trends like “Big and Strong”, “winning fouls”, “That holding role” etc…..  I believe we’re just coming out of it now, with the likes of Salah, Mane, Son, etc…. COYL - pick the nipsters !!
