Change of style

So IC said about changing the style of play, what do you think the new game plan will be and how would you set the team up?

i recall that was very much Brian Clough's philosophy, which served him quite well.

Really difficult as the players have been recruited with the current system in mind and generally, it has been individual mistakes that have cost us goals rather than a problem with 'the system' itself.  Obviously a different situation at the other end of the park where we don't have the players who look capable of playing the way we have become accustomed to watch an IC team play and to be honest I can't imagine any system that would work at NL level with the current attacking personnel.  Hopefully the departure of Morias will allow at least one new face in and if (big if) Barrett can get himself fitter we might be able to turn things around, imo Wrexham first half was the best half of football from Lynn at the Walks for a long time

I also think the current squad would struggle with playing a back four (I think we have tried it in three games, resulting in three defeats with an aggregate 0-7 scoreline against Wealdstone, Weymouth and Altrincham all clubs that we should be competitive against) so moving away from a back three would need yet more changes to the squad that I just don't think we currently have the contacts or finance to make that work mid-season

Whether or not the players currently at the club are suited to a change of tactics, SOMETHING had to be changed, as there is only one ending to the story if they just carry on with the same plan, week after week.

Maybe carry out WLM idea of getting players up the pitch to collect those overhit crosses  :laughcry:

I am sure IC has a few ideas how he can adjust things to get us out of this hole.  Will it be enough ?  It seems we have have played a system to keep us tight at the back but then we create very little at the other end.   Push on to create more and it leaves us more open at tha back.

Maybe, just maybe changing nearly the whole squad in the summer was a step to far.  A more gentler approach may have been a little more rewarding
What if the Hokey Cokey really is what it’s all about ?

Think it will just be a change of emphasis.......if there's an obvious and easy pass on, out of the back then do it and make it stick, if not go longer. If we are under the cosh for long spells, when we get possession look to go long behind the backs and if it's in the first ten or last ten of each half go longer rather than play out from the back.

Mall, I think the wing backs have been pushed on as much, if not more, than in previous seasons but I just don't see who from our current crop of midfielders is likely to break the line / go beyond the forwards in the way that Henderson / Carey have done over the past couple of years.  Likewise getting forward quicker only really works if you have forwards who can work with that, Linton maybe but don't see it as being part of Omotayo's game.

Fingers crossed the opening at DoF will allow someone with more NL experience and possible EFL contacts to come in to assist on the recruitment side

They have made no mention of replacing the DoF. It said he's having a break. Looks as if Backie has left the door open for a return if he wishes to do so.
First they fascinate the fools, then they attempt to gag the intelligent.

Not necessarily a 'replacement' but given our lack of NL experience and EFL contacts I don't see the harm in trying to fill that role on a temporary basis, after all it could be a different sort of role next season anyway either building on NL survival or if we drop to the NLN and have to go back to part-time which would presumably mean a pretty high player turnover.

Whoever what ever, we just need someone who can score goals between the 8 yards, given the chance.

Recruitment of a proven goalscorer at this level, mid season, is surely going to be a very expensive exercise in terms of transfer fees and wages. Only the chairman knows if this is affordable?

If it is, then good contacts are invaluable either via the manager or DOF. If not, having a short term replacement for Backie is not really that important or relevant?

Good thread, but in general, still talking about more CHs, lack of goalscorer(s), and style of play.  I don’t agree we play with style, and in an “open” way.  I’ve banged on for a season, (covering two seasons) that the team don’t play attractive or creative football, but through no fault of their own.  We have lost virtually all our creative players, players who play together, largely on the floor, Henderson, Marriott, Kelly, Carey, and Fox spring to mind, players who rely on skill, and not merely hard work.  Someone said McAully would run through a brick wall for the team, and so would others, but the object is to go round the wall, imho, and we don’t have players, particularly in midfield, who can do that, together, on a regular basis.  Even an ordinary goalscorer will score more if the chances made are a lot easier.  And I don’t believe managers need more than money and contacts, plus good taste in players.  Forget formations, get players (more nipsters, of course !). .. But, as for the future, who used to be well known for the phrase “I KNOW NOOOTHING” ?

Given the players we have ( fairly obvious we can't work with the ones we had two seasons ago),then it's just about tweaking the style, retaining the 3 centre halves and finding a goalscorer.
Not sure we can change the formation too much given what we have.

Also not sure about Dilly's post about "players who play together on the floor", seems to be taking team bonding a little far, but each to their own.
