Is Backie coming back?

I did note somewhere (can't remember where), that the description of his absence had changed from "taking a break" to "when Backie left".   :dontknow:

Closing date for applications on LinkedIn was 3rd December so hopefully SC has/had interviews lined up for the early part of this week with a view to appointing sooner rather than later, even if Bastock has to take charge for the weekend we have another game on Tuesday (Halifax away) then the Trophy game on the 18th.  Given that it is unlikely we will be able to make changes to the squad until after the Christmas period (not many clubs will be looking to release / loan out over a busy time) he will have a bit of time to assess what he has and also what is needed if he is to "ensure stability and safety this season and then to develop the club with the aim of playing league football in the near future" (quote from the job advert)

Who ever is appointed i wish them nothing but success in the Herculean task that they face....If they succeed in rescuing our season and staving off relegation, that will entitle them to be added to the list of Linnet Legends, in my opinion.

That last line worries me.

I genuinely hope I'm proved wrong, but having the intention of playing league football is not the way to run a non league football club.

Having the intention of building a  club that attracts enough fans to support a team capable of competing at the highest level that club can reasonably afford, would be a more achievable long term goal.

Sounds like promotion at any cost.

Where does that leave us when it all goes belly up,  again?

I wouldn’t lose too much sleep over the thought of league football!!!!!!!!!!!…..it’s about as likely to EVER happen as the WHO announcing that the Covid pandemic is over, tomorrow! This season has proven that the club could never sustain such status, as the fans clearly won’t come unless the side are winning….and at this level, that needs 10 times more money than what the current owner can provide (rightly or wrongly) and I can’t see anyone ever being prepared to take that sort of financial risk.

Whether you agree with it or not, league football has been Mr Cleeve's stated goal ever since day one so perhaps no surprise to see it in the manager's job advert.

"ensure stability and safety this season and then to develop the club with the aim of playing league football in the near future" (quote from the job advert)

The term being used now is "develop the club" (which is what should have been going on from day one). So maybe there will be a 5 year plan, rather than an instant return to step one and an attempt at League football the following season.

It doesn't say anything about staying at step 1 this season. It says "stability and safety".

Depends how you read it. "Stability" at the Club is now needed irrespective of us staying up or not.

"Saftey" could well mean stopping the Club from going out of business and not necessarily staying at step 1.

A good manager for this level will know what it takes to avoid relegation, or move up a step. He will do his home work in all sorts of areas, on the players available, if he believes he can have a working relationship with the Chairman, the budget available (prospective cup runs, gate sizes etc), Commercial activity (as this will effect his budget), state of pitch, training facilities, etc etc etc.

Personally, I can see a Manager from a lower level coming in if its a case of ensuring Club stability and safety this season, and if the Chairman is not expecting an instant return to step one (sorry, I can't see us avoiding relegation).

From there the new Manager to be given the task of developing the Club over (say) a 5 year period, and getting it in a position to achieve what the current Chairman dreams of.

Spot on Kevin (meant to post that on you post on the Crouch Report thread too), personally the fact that it was included in the advert merely highlights the continuation of the fantasy rather than 'showing ambition' which is how some may choose read it.

B&G, I am not really sure your interpretation would apply to the football manager post as there are far, far too many things that are (or at least should be) outside of their remit, if the job advert was for an operations manager / CEO then that's a different matter.  As for someone doing their homework, that would be the big concern in terms of the sort of candidates we would appeal to as I can't see the club appealing to an experienced manager so the question is then would an up and coming manager want to come in now or maybe take the gamble that the post will be available again at the end of the season?

Yes, Tony, agreed. The whole 'building the club' piece is beyond the manager's role and in the current model as far as I can tell resides with one man.

Sorry Tony, not with you.

What interpretation are you referring to, as I haven't said any of the jobs, apart from the one mentioned in club advert, would be in Managers remit.

Get Michael Gash in as player manager (even if he can only commit to part time hours for the remainder of the season.....Bazza can help him share the hours and load).

Also try to prise Simeon  Jackson away from Chelmsford.

Two old heads who are past their prime, but know the score, can take a chance and between them are capable of 20 goals for the rest of the season .

If the rest of the side can chip in that could be enough.

Don't see any point in taking a massive punt on untried or inexperienced players at this point.
