Current Season and team
« on: December 09, 2021, 05:16:58 PM »
Hey guys, I hope you don't mind me posting here.

I just thought I'd get in touch and see what the general view is from the supporters about King's Lynn.
I'm aware you're in the process of getting a new manager in and wanted to see what the view is.

All cards on the table, I'm a coach in a National League South team, that is interested in the post - not in becoming manager, but maybe a part of a new coaching staff.

From the outside looking in, it looks as if generally you aren't currently scoring enough goals - do correct me if I'm wrong, I don't want to offend. I've seen a few posts saying that it would be quite a big task keeping the team up this season, is there much optimism going on at the minute?

If anyone could give me an overview of the team so far this season that would be immensely helpful - whether it be formations played, best performing players, what as fans you'd like to see on the pitch etc.

My experience so far in these positions is that the fans on the ground are always more tuned in to what's really needed than club hierarchy.

Again, I hope it's okay to ask this, and I'm not breaking any forum rules - feel free to take this down if that's the case.

Thanks guys!

Managers usually bring in their own coaches.
As for the lack of goals, there seems to be a tendency to recruit players who have yet to prove themselves at this level.

It could be worth your while getting an application in. Maybe the Chairman would fancy taking the Managers job/team selection on, if he had a good and reliable Coach to work with.   :dontknow:

OK, I will bite even though I am not sure I entirely agree with the second paragraph above.  Thoughts below are a personal opinion based on all but one of the home games this season (I missed the Wealdstone game)

So, this season has seen us go full-time with an influx of players meaning we have only retained six players from last season and three of them joined mid-season last year, some players have joined on multi year contracts whilst there are a number of season long loan signings and we have also had a couple of loanees come and go for a month.  Last year we were shocking at the back and you can see that is where the recruitment has been most successful, although I appreciate no clean sheet in 17 league games might not show it.

We replaced our keeper, going from a loanee from Norwich to the experience of Paul Jones, he is a good shot stopper but not perhaps as vocal as some had hoped but definitely an upgrade.

We have predominately played with three centre halves from McFadden, Bowry, Fernandez and Bird.  Bowry is on loan from Cheltenham and has probably been our most consistent defender, McFadden always gives 100% but isn't quite quick enough to play in a back 4, Fernandez is on loan from Stevenage and isn't bad on the ball but lacks concentration and Bird is also a 'footballing' centre half who also seems to 'have a mistake in him'.  All four are probably capable NL centre halves but in a team lacking any attacking threat and very low on confidence any mistake is being amplified.  All four have missed games through injury this season

The wing back positions have rotated between three of the returning players Aaron Jones, Barrows and Denton as I don't think we have yet had a game when all three have been fully fit.  Jones is a solid right back who showed last year he can play at this level, Denton probably isn't a good enough defender to play in a back 4 but is OK at wing back and Barrows has spells of looking really good at either full back or even centre half but maybe not consistently enough.  At NLN we used the wing backs well and lots of our chances came from these areas but that hasn't been the case at step 1

Midfield has tended to consist of Coleman (who joined last year when the 1st team squad was furloughed) and long standing captain Clunan who many were concerned about making the step up but has been one of our better performers this season, probably playing further forward than would be his natural position.  Coleman is limited but does a job in front of the defence.  Also in the squad is McGavin on loan from Ipswich and this just hasn't worked out, he is great from a dead ball but really struggles with the physical side of NL (with and without the ball) and now just wants to get rid of the ball asap - saw a stat that he makes loads of 'successful' passes but that is certainly a case of stats not showing the 'effectiveness' of a player's contribution.

Up front, we have played a front two with a single supporting attacking midfielder, which has been like a revolving door (Rowley on loan from Chesterfield - now returned, Walker on loan from Bristol Rovers - now returned, Davis on loan from Milwall - now returned and Barrett signed in October having been released by Bristol Rovers at the start of September but still looks nowhere near match fit but obviously has talent).  The front two has been a mixture of Omotayo, Morias (now at Dagenham), Linton (on loan from Wycombe) and Charles (just signed) and it wouldn't be unfair to say none of them have looked remotely good enough for NL

To be fair to all of the above and the management team, there are plenty of problems off the pitch that probably haven't helped and with the club playing at least one league above it's 'natural' position.  Fans can all agree to disagree about what the solution is but hopefully the club is planning for life at step 2 next season, with perhaps a contingency if things can be turned around, so any manager / coach coming into a role at the club ought to do so with their eyes open to that probability

Always thought Bowery was on contract until 2022 not free transfer.

Good analysis, TonyM, but IDHO, I don’t think there IS a “physical side of the game without the ball”.  That is a foul, and if we get players in like that, we’ll get nowhere !

The modern football world, KES !  The one inhabited by Guardiola, and not Mourinho !
