End of the line?

After the defeat last night againt Notts County, I think this is the end of the line. To be honest I never though we would do very well in this league. The standard in this league really does show the diffence. For over 40 years I'd allways hopped we could be in the football league and stay there. To stay even in this National League, You've got to have full time players and a good budget with really good players. We have a few,  but nowhere enough to complete at this level. Next year no way we can keep most of the same players and thats if we want any of them. My opinion is to rebuild for next year and with the new manager see what happens! and take it from there.. Just my opinion..

Anton, there were some of us who have been championing a 'rebuild' for a while but it has to be off the pitch as well as on it although I would agree that the squad will need a clear out in the summer whether we survive in the NL or do go down and go back to part time.  The main stumbling block will be whether SC thinks it is 'the end of the line' and whether he has the determination and/or cash to oversee a NLN set up, which is probably as high as we could currently sustain.  Add into the mix that we have a number of the current squad on multi year deals who may prove difficult to offload given performances this season and the process of reverting to part time looks that much harder.

There has never been much medium term planning ( forget long term).  It’s all been seat of the pants stuff.   No real infrastructure at the Club.  Jobs handed out to good old boys who just are there sniffing around rather than getting some square pegs in square holes.

On the plus side it’s been a hellva journey under IC and one that will stay long in the memory for what that guy did for this club.

I think one of two things will happen. If we get a bit of luck I think beating the drop is a possibility. This season isn’t a lost cause as of yet. There’s a lot of winnable games left and there’s enough positive signs (however small) that this isn’t yet time to call it a day.

But if we do go down, I see the possibility of a double relegation. If we go down, the squad will be decimated, the NLN is a good standard with some good teams and it won’t be easy.

I feel a strange sense amongst some fans that they will take some pleasure in a relegation as it will somehow be a slap down for that Chairman. But regardless of who runs the club, I want to see national league football so we will be there supporting hoping the little part we play helps us stay up another season.

Someone has to say it and much as it pains me I think it is time everybody got behind the team,like Mr Cleeve or not he runs the club,if he pulls the plug we are gone again! Most of the games now until the end of the season are B games with entry on a par with many in this league.

Not sure there are many who will take any pleasure in relegation or have much interest in what that would mean for the chairman but a quick question, if we do manage to stay up what do you see changing off the field that makes you think things could dramatically improve next season?   Whilst it has been great to see the club up against the likes of Chesterfield, Southend, Notts County etc we are so far away from having a sustainable model at step 1 that the risks to the finances that another season at this level would bring are too great for some, myself included, I stood on the terrace in 2009 vs Retford and never want to feel like that at a game again. 

As for the squad being decimated if we go down, I would suggest that we are unlikely to see half of the current crop back for 22-23 irrespective of what league we are in although multi year contracts may mean we see more back than the manager may like.

Of course we are in a very difficult position.  Survival at this level is still possible.  There are several fellow strugglers, but we’re only a couple of wins away from being truly in the scrap, difficult though they are to obtain.  Just want to say thanks to SC for his huge financial help, enthusiasm, and belief that this club can continue to make progress.  I’m less optimistic than him, because we lack the infrastructure, but we do have crowd potential at this level, despite the understandably low attendees at present.  I think we have a Southern League set-up, but I sincerely hope we see SC, and therefore us, the supporters, achieve his stated ambitions.

Have to feel for Stephen Cleeve.   He took over a mid table step 3 club going nowhere ( up or down).  Buster had done the job with Setch in getting us out of step 5 then step 4, but we were stagnating at a step 3 and it seemed that was As far as Buster would take us.

SC coming in with big ideas to achieve EFL football, was always a pipe dream, but still a positive dream all the same.  Getting Culverhouse in was a master stroke.  To my mind his greatest accomplishment.  However at no time ( despite several false dawns) did he get things right off the pitch.

SC had every right to think as we progressed through the Leagues attendance’s would increase to support the climb.  Sadly, as predicted by many this was not the case.   It’s all about winning and being successful.  Another lesson he has had to take on the chin.

Then along comes Covid and really in Football terms all bets are off for a club like Kings Lynn and it’s ageing supporter base.  SC has been hit by both some cruel luck and in turn some pretty ropey decisions on his part. 

He has given it his best shot, but come up way short of his ambition for League Football.   Will he have the resources or indeed the stomach to continue to shoot for the moon or will he accept that it was all a pipe dream and settle for running a step 2/3 Club ?

I sincerely hope we do stay up and then see if we could be better on the pitch next season. We have been needing a goal scorer for some time and so far no one has come in that can do that. We simply don't score enough goals, so unfortunately relegation is quite likely.

11 points off safety, I just don't see it happening
