Tommy goes to Aldershot.

Aldershot confirm TW appointment.

02/04/2023

Aldershot Town Football Club can confirm that Ross McNeilly has been relieved of his temporary duties as First-Team Manager and will return to his former role of Academy Manager.

We’d like to thank Ross for all his efforts whilst involved in First-Team affairs.

Tommy Widdrington will take charge of the First Team from our return to training tomorrow morning.

Widdrington recently resigned from his Managerial role at Kings Lynn Town, leaving them second in the Vanarama National League North.

The 51-year-old enjoyed a long playing career in the Football League with an abundance of Premier League appearances with Southampton.

In his non-playing career, he spent five years as Manager of Eastbourne Borough and before joining Kings Lynn in December 2021, had a number of roles at Bristol Rovers during a three-year spell.

Club Chairman Shahid Azeem said: “Firstly, thanks to Ross for all of his huge effort and hard work since stepping up from Academy Manager back in October.”

“With just six games left, we felt we needed to make a change and when notified of Tommy’s resignation, wanted to act quickly to secure the man that we believe can help us with the final push towards mathematical safety.”

Welcome to the Shots, Tommy!

So the worst kept secret of the week is finally out there.  Think a couple of posters put it in here that’s where he was headed as soon as the news broke of him walking.

The Aldershot chairman saying they moved quickly after they learnt of his resignation.  Ffs these people really do try and take the P.  Like anyone is gonna believe that BS.  This was sorted days ago.  You would think the Chairman of a club would man up and say he put his name in the ring and we decided he was the one we wanted.

Interesting to know when the current Manager was told he was being sacked.  Was it before they started the process of interviewing prospective candidates,?  Or was he told after Tommy was offered and accepted the role ?

Tommy should be wary of what goes around comes around.  Aldershot have a bit of a reputation of hiring new Managers while the current one is still in situ.
What if the Hokey Cokey really is what it’s all about ?

Hardly a surprise. He must have been talking to them for a while and the whole episode was well orchestrated. We must have a cast iron compensation case?

Apparently he was interested, but didn't appear to be the right person for the job.

Does he fit the criteria of having a son who needs a guaranteed start ?  Even when he’s injured and the TV are there.

Bit harsh……..Theo provides some necessary bite in the middle of the park and I had the feeling that just before his injury he was winning the doubters over.

I wonder where people would place TW in their ratings. I would have his team (ie the 3 of them) at the top of management teams that have been at The Walks in the last 20-30 years…..probably the only one capable of keeping a team in the National League

I don't know about any more father and son combos but it shouldn't really surprise us that Tommy went to Aldershot. Just following in the footsteps of Fronkie, who went to Hollywood?
