Would have liked to have seen Ryan as Vice Captain as the next stage of his development which will ultimately see him club captain. Good choice as skipper Mettam is a winner

I agree.....I think he will lead by example. In those few games on loan playing in a poorly performing team he illustrated leadership qualities when he could easily have just concentrated on getting himself fit.

KCAR65  Funny you decide he's never a leader!
Skippered Norwich age groups Under 10-15.
Skippered Peterborough Reserves and 2 years as Skipper at Lowestoft!!
Look a bit deeper as to why he's stood down!!

Funny that!!  I happened to watch him many times; and also for past 15 years at close quarters!!
He has outstanding game understanding that's what attracted Tommy Taylor, Darren Ferguson and Lowestoft!!
The back 4 had / have some loose cannons which may reflect on Sam!!
However, we all have opinions and there are almost certainly other reasons he's stood down!!

Teams need leaders/captains and also unit leaders. The Defence Unit needs an organiser/leader and the Midfield a General to marshal the first line of defence and attack.

Defend in depth and attack in width.

Dominate the Ground of Tactical Importance - that's the whole pitch.

Very rare you see a striker as a skipper ( Ronaldo apart  :cup2:).  As Sam didn't want the job I would have taken a massive gamble on it and given it to Quigs.  Might be just the thng that would pull him into Line.

My 'problem' with Sam last season was one of fitness, not one of ability and he is obviously excellent at reading the game; so I still wonder whether with his ability to anticipate situations that he might develop into that 'Bunting type' holding mid fielder that we have been sorely missing?

He did a good job last year on the few occasions he played in front of the back four, (because he'd lost his place to Castellan.) The only problem this season is who'd take his spot at the back, to push him to DM?

I would still like to see Ryan alongside Matty.............for many uyears to come as I think they would develop into a formidable central defensive pairing.
