Surely even academy players have still got to be able to “do it”.

Really Dilly?   Not sure it did Fergie or Man Utd any harm when Messrs Nevilles, Butt, Scholes, Giggs and Beckham all came through the Academy to first team then international status, do you ?

That was Manchester United and the greatest Manager of all times.

You know the saying if you don’t buy a ticket you don’t win the raffle.  If we don’t have the cash to bring in the ready made product then we have to develop it.  Let’s just hope we have closed the loopholes that saw Joe Taylor slip through the net.

I would hope within a couple of years we get back to seeing some home grown product pulling on a first team shirt.

If promising local and academy players like Royale are not going to be given an opportunity in the short term, with the attendant risk of losing them, surely there is a loaning out strategy: hence Robbie Back's appointment??

Interesting post B & G…….Dilly questioned the benefit of developing players. I would argue that developing players is the main function of academies. So, if you argue that there is little benefit in developing players, it follows, to my mind that you would close your Academy as it wouldn’t be of benefit.

You're the only one bringing up the suggestion of closing academies.

As you say its your "mind" as to why you think that's what should happen.

Thank you, B & G!  And no umbrage towards others!  I didn’t suggest closing Academies.  Obviously young players can improve, but I believe there is too much talk from pundits, etc, about tactics and developments.  I was only quoting Jimmy Greave, who I happen to believe!  And, while I’m at it, whatever is Joe Cole on about now about today’s finished lunchtime game?!!
