FA Cup - home to Cheshunt
« on: September 02, 2024, 09:19:51 AM »
Sadly, Gt Yarmouth and Sheringham were both knocked out last round.I believe Grantham are in today's draw. Presumably a home draw against lesser opposition would be preferred. An opportunity to try out different permutations or a Saturday off for some while Fringe players are given a run out, depending on your point of view I guess.

Very surprised to see us in the southern section of the draw. But not complaining.

Think that was the case last year too. It used to be that we would play Alfreton 3/4 times a season....and that's not great for any team

From the post match interview it appears AL will go with a "full strength" team against Cheshunt. I guess that's the norm, with managers always feeling under pressure to get a result. There must be an argument given how tough the NLN is for giving some a rest and also giving those waiting in the wings some match time. If the players are good enough to be in a step2 squad I would have thought they should be good enough to take the field against step 3 opposition:

Boyes, Isaacson, Rowan, Coulson, Wilson, Walker, Hughes, Whiteley, Barnes, Cybulski,Omotayo sounds a decent eleven to me :stir: :salute: Ps my surname isn't Wenger

Was only a week or so back AL was complaining about the heavy schedule.   Maybe he is under strict instructions from above that a Cup run is imperative for the budget going forward.  So cannot afford any mistakes.
What if the Hokey Cokey really is what it’s all about ?

Yes, I can see that, but if you over use your best players they will pick up knocks and then you're looking at shelling out money for replacements that negates any benefits of a cup run

I hope we do not go down the road of playing so called fringe players, to give them game time. Many clubs have done the same in the past and ended up chaseing the game and getting beat. Cheshunt are on a freebee, if we take them lightly we may be sorry.

We are likely to have to play them at some time in the season and many of them are vying for the shirt anyway.Personally I would rather it happen V Cheshunt than V Scunthorpe, Kidderminster, Chorley etc

I would hope the squad of 20 are all step 2 players and could come in and do a job.   I don’t see how squad players can be kept match sharp without getting game time either at Lynn, or out on loan.
