King's Lynn 4 Hillingdon Borough 0
7th August 2004
Michael Frew (2), Ben Sedgemore and David Bridgwater struck in the first half to settle this at times one-sided BGB League Championship match.
The Linnets comfortably beat Ryman League Division One North side to snare an early piece of silverware this season.
Linnets boss Keith Webb said: "I'm highly satisfied, with the first half in particular. There were excellent goals which would've graced any football match.
"In the second half they lifted their game and made it hard for us. We had to dig in.
"We never got out of third gear but we hit the bar, the keeper's made saves and if they'd have gone in, it could have been another four or five.
"We had to take Steve Melton off and change our formation to 4-3-3. It's a shape I'm going to look to be playing a bit more.
"There was an opportunity to play it in a game and we looked quite comfortable doing it."
Webb added: "The situation's changed at Hillingdon. They've had one or two financial problems, but you can only beat the opposition put in front of you."
Within the first two minutes Julian Joachim flashed a shot past the far post from an acute angle. Jack Defty's effort was turned around the post by keeper Matt Davis.
An early hamstring injury to Steve Melton meant a change of formation to 4-3-3.
Mark Camm came on and sat behind busy midfielders Sedgemore and Bridgwater, with Frew (on the left) and Joachim either side of Defty.
This soon bore fruit with Frew expertly nodding home at the far post after a cross from Weaver.
Hillingdon's first chance came on the half-hour, Dave Kendall heading over a corner.
Great work from Frew led to the second goal, robbing Arron Kiely, and Sedgemore smashed home from 20 yards.
Camm laid off to Frew, who rifled a training-ground lob from 25 yards over the helpless Davis.
Just before the break, Bridgwater repeated the trick with another exquisite finish when Defty held the ball up.
The Walks outfit were not quite so dominant in the second half but still had plenty of chances. Defty had one cleared off the line, and his replacement Danny Bloomfield and Sedgemore both hit the bar.
Big centre-forward sub Jerry Lyons wasted Hillingdon's best chance by heading well wide.
Webb confirmed that Greg Crane will be his captain in season 2008/09, with Ben Sedgemore the club captain.
