King's Lynn 3 Gainsborough Trinity 0
3rd November 1982
Two first half goals from Nolan Keeley set the Linnets up for a comfortable victory over Gainsborough on Wednesday in the NPL Cup second round replay.
And when Andy Bircumshaw struck to keep up his recent goal-a-game record there was never any danger that Gainsborough would get back into it.
When the teams met back in November there had been a goalless deadlock, but this second meeting was a different proposition.
To start with, Gainsborough arrived late and had just ten players, their centre forward and substitute missing the coach pick-up because the car broke down.
So the visitors played throughout with only ten men, but they always ran hard to make it difficult for the Linnets.
Lynn were keen to further weaken Gainsborough's resolve with an early goal and after Ray Elliott went close with a thunderbolt, Fred Easthall, had a close range drive handled by a defender, Keeley made no mistake with a low shot into the corner.

On the right wing Les McJannet and Brian Thomson were linking effectively and it was McJannet who thumped over the deep cross in the 42nd minute which caused more problems for the visitors. The ball ran loose and Keeley was there to steer in his shot.
In the second half Gainsborough tried to push players forward whenever possible, but were caught out in the 58th minute when Thomson chipped over and Bircumshaw's header squeezed past a defender and the keeper.
Bircumshaw later went off because of a hamstring injury allowing Dave Burrows another run-out on the left wing, and there were some narrow escapes for Gainsborough before the end.
Richard Johnston had another excellent captain's game and took the "man of the match" award.
