King's Lynn 0 Margate 1
4th August 2001
LINNETS manager Tony Spearing said of the defeat: "We can take heart from this.
"Margate made life very difficult for us by sitting in the holes and staying very deep and although we created very little, people should remember that Margate only conceded 19 goals in the league last season.
"They are well organised and I can't see many sides scoring a hatful against them in the Conference."
The winner came 10 minutes from time when Leon Braithwaite caught Lynn's defence napping and burst through before slotting the ball under Steve Wilson, who had another confident game. Spearing praised Wilson: "The keeper did himself a lot of favours today and has played extremely well In the last two or three games.
Lynn's best chance came after 32 minutes when Jamie March blazed Lee Hudson's cross a couple of feet over the bar.
Margate were reduced to 10 men deep into stoppage time when Tommy Tyne was deservedly dismissed for a scathing challenge on Adie Hayes.
Lynn: Wilson, Dakin, Robinson, Full, Clark, March (Eldridge 75), Minett, Hayes, Miller (Anderson 60), Hudson, Clarke (Bacon 75). Subs not used: Wright. Nobes.
Att: 470.
