Witney Town 1 King's Lynn 2
5th April 1985
LYNN left Marriott's Close on Good Friday with the three points but overall the performance against struggling
Witney was far from convincing.
For an hour the visitor's two leading scorers Martin Coupe and Kevin Ready hardly had a look in against a reliable defence which had no difficulty in coping with the persistent long ball and Lynn seemed incapable or unable of changing the pattern of play.
Witney controlled the midfield where Steve Brooks and Martin Blackler did as they pleased, but poor finishing enabled Lynn to
stay on terms until a minute before the interval.
Steve Mercer stopped a hard cross from Phil Emsden, but before he could complete the clearance Paul Berry moved in and swept the ball into the net.
Witney's first mistake was severely punished by Coupe after 64 minutes. No
defender challenged the striker to a Ready corner which he headed in, and six
minutes later the best move of the match produced the winner. Andy Claxton started it with an accurate throw to Mario Ippolitto, and Tim Gale, Ready and Coupe combined to create an opening for Martin Twigger whose fierce drive was parried by goalkeeper Nick Taylor and ran loose to Coupe who forced it over the line.
