Wisbech Town 0 King's Lynn 2
5th September 1985
Kevin Ready got his own back on Martin Coupe when slotting in Lynn's second goal at Wisbech on Sunday, in the East Anglian Cup area final.
Coupe did all the work with a dazzling run in the 88th minute, but after taking the ball wide of keeper Hudson, he found Ready moving in to tap into an empty net.
"I beat the defence, but I couldn't beat Kevin Ready." Coupe joked afterwards. But Ready was quick to point out that recently against Gravesend his own shot was going in when Coupe ran in to claim the goal. "I think we're evens now." said Ready.
In a hard fought match, typical of so many clashes between the teams over the years, there were few chances. Jackie Gallagher rose above the Lynn defence to put a header over the bar in the 18th minute and that was as close as Wisbech were to get: on the hour, Martin Twigger forced a good save from Hudson which at the time was Lynn's best effort.
After 75 minutes a superb pass forward by Tim Gale had Wisbech in all sorts of trouble and although Hudson blocked Twigger, there was space for Ready to turn in the loose ball. When Ready got the second, there was no way Wisbech could come back.
Colin Foster and Ian Jones were booked after a clash and Steve Mercer was cautioned after tripping Roy McManus.
Wisbech: Hudson, Jones, Taylor, Feary, Mattless, G Rider (sub Ward 84 mins), W Rider, Brighty, Gallagher, Scase, McManus.
Lynn: Claxton, Mercer, Woods, Adams, Easthall, Gale, Foster, Hines, Ready, Coupe, Twigger: sub Ippolitto.
