Newport County 1 King's Lynn 2
6th May 2000
LINNETS secured their best points haul in the top flight of the Southern League since 1984/85 following this stirring display in Wales.
And Saturday's three points also ensured that Gary Mills' side pipped arch-rivals Tamworth to fifth place in the table to complete a memorable season at the club.
"The victory on Saturday completed the best 48 hours of my life," said delighted boss Mills after the game.
"Friday's meeting with the board of directors was so positive. Everyone was looking towards the future and I've just witnessed a performance from my players that was something special.
"The lads came here with the chance to finish fifth, sixth or seventh, but they showed what they are about by finishing top of that pile."
The Linnets went into the game without the playing influence of their manager along with coach Tony Spearing.
But their absence didn't prevent the Linnets from producing an awesome performance which rated as one of their best travelling displays this season.
The match statistics told the whole story - Lynn had nine shots on target compared to Newport's one, which came courtesy of a Dave Robinson own goal, while the corner count read 11-2 in Lynn's favour.
Despite dominating for long periods of the game, Lynn had to wait until the 38th minute before eventually taking the lead when Dave Puttnam chested the ball into the path of Emeka
Nwadike to volley home his third goal in the space of seven days.
Newport had the unlucky Robinson to thank for drawing them level two minutes before the break when he nodded Jason
Donovan's centre past Chuck Martini.
Home keeper Pat Mountain kept his side in the game with a string of fine saves from Jon Palmer, Simon Dakin, Lyndon Rowland and Puttnam while Robinson saw a header cleared off the line.
Lynn's winner came seven minutes from time when
Rowland delivered a cross from the left which Newport defender Steve Benton could only side-foot into his own net.
