Lynn F.C. won their first championship since 1954 when they beat Brentwood at The Walks on Wednesday to finish top of the Eastern Professional Floodlight League, but they hardly gave a championship display in their final match of the season.
Play was scrappy all the way through, and though the Linnets did well to end Brentwood's run of 26 games without defeat, their victory was anything but a triumph for football generally.
Brentwood were a methodical side without real penetration except through their right-winger Dillsworth and rarely troubled the firm Lynn defence.
Most of the action was at the other end but the Linnets made poor use of their possession.
There was a definite lack of cohesion in midfield, with neither Hawksbv nor Brooks on form, and little was seen of wingers Savino and Tough
As a result Lindsay and Jenkins were left to battle on alone with mixed results.
Jenkins scored the only goal and was unlucky with anther fine effort that was brilliantly saved.
Hawksby headed over early on before Brentwood nearly took a surprise lead after 14 minutes. Mansfield lobbed the ball forward and Coe had to race from his goal and dive at centre-forward Diggins' feet to prevent a certain goal.
A minute later Coe finger-tipped an angled shot from Hyde on to the post.
Lynn struck back and in the 30th minute only a superb flying save by Dunbar kept out a screaming 25 yarder from Jenkins.
However ten minutes later Jenkins left him helpless with a precise header after Lindsay had back-headed a right-wing cross.
The second-half started with the Linnets going all out for another goal and Tough, who previously had been ineffective, hit the post of after three minutes, and seven minutes later had a brilliant shot disallowed for pushing,
At the other end a header from Diggins was cleared off the line. and after 17 minutes Dillsworth headed against a post. Brentwood came more into the game. but they lacked the craft to create easy chances. The match deteriorated in a midfield battle broken only in the 32nd minute by a fierce shot over Coe's bar by Dlggins, and by the end neither side looked capable of scoring again.
